OCN_Logo.gif SPRUCE

Spruces grow best in relatively moist soils, their crowns characteristically dense and spirelike. About 40 species of spruces grow in the cooler and temperate parts of the Northern Hemisphere. Seven are native to the United States and Canada; others are found in Europe and Asia, and most abundantly in China where there are about 18 species. Many spruces are commercially imported, especially for paper pulp. Some spruces, including a number of introduced species, are planted as ornamentals.

Norway Spruce (picea abies) are originally from Europe. Today, many varieties of this species can be found planted in the U.S. and Canada. Needles are stiff, dark green, 0.5 to 0.8 of an inch long, flattened to triangular, usually pointed forward. Cones are brown, 4 to 7 inches long. Bark is reddish brown. Grows up to 125 feet tall, 2 feet in diameter.

Black Hills Spruce is the South Dakota state tree and a type of white spruce (picea glauca). It has a dense growth habit and doesn't get too tall--about twenty to twenty-five feet. Grows slightly slower and more dense than white spruce. It is well adapted to heavy clay soils. Available in the smaller sizes for customer installation.
