This classic military style 1 ton Power Wagon that was 1st introduced to the civilian market in 1946. They maintained the same basic styling into the late 60's and saw several variations produced for export into the 70's.
Power Wagons of this type proved to be very rugged indeed. Their drivetrain configuration is a direct descendant of the successful Dodge WWII 3/4 ton 4x4 models. Although designated as a 1 ton model the truck was designed to carry 2 tons off road.
Speed was not an issue at the time so the practical road speeds for this Power Wagon were around 50 mph. The small inline 6 gasoline engine had it's work cut out for it. Rated at around 100 hp with an empty truck weight of more than 5,000 lbs, these vehicles cannot be considered Powerful any any measure today.
Low gearing, strength, simple and reliable operation are the Flat Fender style Power Wagon's virtues.

'57-'60 Civilian Power Giant Style Power Wagons

|
|
1957 was the first year of a conventional style Civilian Style Power Wagon in a light duty 1/2 and 3/4 ton version. A two ton version preceeded these models in 1956 that would become the infamous W500.
A 1 ton Power Giant model was introduced in 1958 that compared favorably with the 1 ton Military Flat Fender style Power Wagon. The new model took over the W300 designation and the tried and true favorite was reclassified as W300M.
The Power Giant models were built through the 1960 model year with various changes and many options not found on the Flat Fender style PW's. Automatic transmissions, powerful V-8's, power steering and brakes are just a few. All of these models were produced in very small numbers by todays standards.
The Power Giant models can be considered the first line of what we enjoy as modern 4x4 trucks of today. The overall performance of these trucks in stock form should not be underestimated and they can make a practical regular driver.

'47 WD-20 1 Ton W Series 2 wheel drive express pickup

Power Waqon History would not be complete without mention of the W Series '41-'47 Dodge trucks. The style actually started with the '39 T followed by the '40 V Series each with a distinctive grille treatment. The design congealed in '41 and this W Series would prove Dodge's most popular in sales untill the '60's.
The cab was the basis of the flat fendered Power Wagon designated WDX in '46. The fire wall and floor has different stampings as well as the valance below the doors. This was due to the specific off road design of the Power Wagon chassis which placed the engine and transmission up much higher and forward in the frame, also tucking the transfercase up high beneath the cab seat. The running boards were also place high for ground clearance requiring the door sill change.
The WD-20 pictured above was my first " frame off' restoration completed as a husband/wife project over a 3 year period. The engine machine work and original pin striping was the only work "farmed out". It has seen a number of shows over the past years and is a consistant place finisher including a Best of Show at the 2000 So. Cal. Spring Fling.

A portion of the Power Giant heritage lived on past 1961. The popular Town Wagon and Town Panel models were adapted to the redesigned '61 S Series chassis and continued production till the close of the '66 model year. The Power Giant cab was used on Dodge's big truck line into the late '70's with LCF and Big Horn models. The hood and fender line of the modern Dodge Ram trucks bears a strong likeness to the Power Giant Era rigs.
