In 1985 I documented the history of the West Perth Football club on video and audio tape with a total of 2 1/2 hours of footage.
I spoke to the players who were part of the club from 1909 onwards. On these pages you will find the sories from these players that makes up the impressive history of West Perth that began on May 2nd, 1885  .
BILL KESSELL ~ 1909 TO 1915

"Things were pretty free and easy in those days. The first official coach I remember was Ivo Crapp (the umpire) who coached us for a while. The Captain in 1911 was Gerry Barn and Jimmy Everett was the vice-captain. "
HAROLD BOYD ~ 1922 SANDOVER MEDALIST

"I won the medal in 1922 and Jimmy Gosnell won it in 1924 and Jimmy Craig in 1927. The draught years saw us very weak in the team .In the rebuilding years as coach we had Don Marinko.Old Don Marinko was a very good ruckman. Then Jack McDermitt came in.We called him "Fat" McDermitt he was rather solid and fat. Then there was players like Johnny Lennard and Popsy Heal in his later years. The team started to build up for a premiership. We brought Jack Cashman from Victoria over here , abig tall ruckman and very forcefull on the ground.
TED TYSON ~1930s  KICKED OVER 1200 GOALS

"I could kick either foot ,left foot snap I was very good on.The grass (Leederville Oval) was much better condition in my time. You can see the stand and much better conditions today (1985). We used to have cold showers when we went to other teams."
STAN "POPS" HEAL - PREMIERSHIP CAPTAIN/COACH IN 1949 & 1951

"We had been defeated in the 1947 grand final defeated in the 1948 grand final .We had a very strong side in that year (1949) .I said to Austin Robertson (Perth coach) ,I feel sorry for you because this was the year we are going to win,we are determined to win it and we won very well. In those days when I was playing, you had to have a good fullforward and we were fortunate because before ray Scott we had Ted Tyson . (In 1951) We could come up as the underdogs and win this grand final. We shifted Ray Scott from full forward to centre half forward because the ball rarely went to full forward the breeze was that strong. We instructed the players that if the ball gets up there,Scotty gets it,he's gotta make full headway to the goals which he kicked one in the last quarter and that won it for us.I would put more pleasure in winning that grand final (1951) than winning the 1949."
RAY SCHOFIELD - 1958 COACH

"I grabbed the opportunity,I started about 16 years before that (playing) .We had a pretty good season .I was nervous as anything .I think I had about 58 boils that year.Roy Inness the head trainer used to do them up every Saturday, put plaster on them. But we got through the season made it into the four. We got knocked off by Perth in the first semi. That year (1958) I think we won our first eleven games."
BRIAN FOLEY ~ 1959 SANDOVER MEDALIST

"Talk about the 1960 year we had a solid team to build on we picked up a couple of interstate imports - John Tanner and Don Williams and they helped us a long a little bit towards the end and it was the good old West Perth product here that was built up over two or three years previously .It takes two or three years to build up a premiership team and we broke through in 1960 and took the big flag.
