40 ft. tall corn Kachina doll, 40 years old & 14 tons, known as the worlds tallest Kachina.
Made of 9 cast cement sections indivdually molded of clay casts so it can be easily moved.
Designed & built by Phillips Sanderson artist/sculpture and architect Bennie Gonzales & engineer Carl Ludlow, commissioned by E. V. Graham who wanted something big to bring people out to his development in Tonto Hills, at the end of cavecreek rd. far north of the towns of Scottsdale & Carefree/ Cavecreek. Sanderson who was a professor of arts at Arizona State College( now ASU). Gonzales a former student of Sanderson and for years worked on many projects together one was the Arizona exhibit at the 1962 Worlds Fair in Seattle. Bennny Gonzales is credited with buildings such as the Ocotillo and Acacia branch libraries in the 60s as well as the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art & the Scottsdale Civic Center.Gonzales is currently ( at the age of 78 ) works on hotel properties in Mexico. Ludlow lives with his wife in the valley he,s 75.Sanderson died 1985 in Calif. Unique project, unique men, In Arizona's history, andyou can own it.
