cover description:
On the winter world of Icefall,
young Danlo has grown up among a tribe of humans genetically altered to
lead a primitive existence. When his tribe is ravaged by plague, he is
forced to give up this simple, spiritual life to journey across the frozen
wastes to the fabled city of Neverness, the teeming center of a vast galactic
civilization. Here, a great destiny beckons Danlo - to pilot a shop to
the heart of the galaxy and battle a deadly bloom of light that is consuming
worlds and suns as it races toward his planet. But first he must confront
the legend of his true father, a bold adventurer who is worshipped as a
god - and the terrible allure of becoming a god himself.
From David Zindell, a master of
imaginative fiction, comes a monumental epic of galactic grandeur and the
human mind, a sweeping tale of a dying future world menaced by dreams of
divinity and by the implacable advance of cosmic destruction.

cover reviews:
Zindell is fashioning an astonishing
epic of our distant and eerie galactic future.
Science fiction as it ought to
be: challenging, imaginative, thought-provoking - and well written. Zindell
has placed himself at the forefront of literary SF.
~ Times Literary Supplement, London
One of the great series of an
imagined world.
Rich and rewarding ... Zindell's
come into his maturity, and science fiction is the better for it.
Rich and skillful.

Limitless imagination The Broken
God can only be described as a tale of epic proportions. This is a novel
of ideas and philosophy so deep and rich in scope and imagination I needed
to take breaks between chapters to think about and absorb what I had read.
It is the story of a young man's search for himself. It is a tale of friendship
and religion. It is novel for and about humanity. If you haven't read this
--- DO!
Refreshing Sci-fi, light years
ahead of our time ... If sci-fi for you equals rebels flying to battle
against an evil empire, or aliens ivading the Earth, then sadly, this book
is not for you. "The Broken God - Book One of a Requium for Homo-Sapiens"
is set thousands of years into the future, humankind is spread across the
galaxy, and there are aliens and they our "friends". This book
is not a shallow shoot-em-up however, nor does it dazzle you with technology,
hoping to distract you from a story lacking in depth. This book is about
the Human condition, compassion and truth, and a young man's struggle to
come to terms with life. Yes, there is technology, and yes, there are space
ships. Zindell's theories however, are so vivid, so realistic, your mind
will reel, as a virtual overload of information is thrust into your mind.
"Neverness", Zindell's first novel, just prepares you for the
sheer story-telling brilliance that is "The Broken God". A truely
uplifting experience.
A book that will change your
view of reality The Broken God was the first book of David Zindell's that
I read. It it is a mixture between original Sci-Fi and Philosophy, and
it looks at the creation of religeons, the corruption of power and the
prejeduce of world views. It also asks the question "what is the truth?"

This is a picaresque novel, describing
Danlo's growth as a human and an explorer on the road to understanding,
couched in an unforgettable world of sweeping proportions. I read this
two years ago, and it still astounds me with the depth of its perceptions
regarding the folly of ascribing one's own world view to the actions and
impulses of others. Danlo begins by aspiring to ahimsa, the doctrine of
never harming anyone, and ends by trying to free people of their beliefs.
The language is exceptional, the intellectual debate a challenge, and the
concept a welcome addition to your own belief system. All this and a damn
fine read, too!
