Introduction
Level: Advanced beginner or Intermediate
Finished size: 49" X 49"
Block size: 7"
Center appliqué block: 15"
Sashing: 1" wide
Borders: 7" wide
Minimum fabric requirements:
-
1 1/2 - 2 yards light tone on tone print for borders, center square triangles
and background for some blocks.
-
1/2 yard matching solid for center appliqué block.
-
1 yard contrast print for sashing and binding. For sashing: cut 44 - 1 1/2"
X 7 1/2" rectangles.
-
12 (or more) prints of your choice in Fat Quarters or Fat Eighths. This is
a good chance to dig into your stash or to purchase a collection of related
fabrics. Remember that among these you will need neutrals for backgrounds,
some greens for stems and leaves; and an accent color for flower centers,
corner stones (cut 24 - 1 1/2" squares), and to accent a few blocks.
The Sampler
The Folk Art Sampler will consist of twelve seven inch pieced blocks which
surround a fifteen inch Diamond in the Square appliqué wreath design.
The outside borders are done in an easy appliqué swag design placed
in the center of each border, with an added 12th log cabin block in each
corner. This quilt could be doubled in size (doubling all patterns) to make
a 94" X 94" queen size quilt, or the sizes given could be used as a center
panel for a full size quilt, by adding extra borders. This is a relatively
easy project, but I put it into the advanced beginner or intermediate level.
You will be given rotary cutting directions but we recognize that most of
you have your own favorite ways of making half-square triangles, flying geese
sections, and doing applique if you are not a beginner. Also, piecing small
blocks such as these requires total accuracy.
Blocks 1 - 4 will be seven patch blocks. They will be given as the first
group to avoid measurement confusion. Each square of these seven patch
blocks will equal 1".
Blocks 5 - 12 will be four patch blocks. Each square of the four patch
blocks will equal 1 3/4" (with a double square measuring 3 1/2"). Remember
these measurements, please!
You also get block #13 (ah, a baker's dozen) which is the Log Cabin. After
you finish your first 12 blocks and have a lot of left over scraps, make
four of these for the outer corners. Each square of the Log Cabin block will
equal 1". (7 1/2" block including seam allowance.)
As you work on these blocks, you will also be working on the center
appliqué square, and later on, the four appliqué borders.
For the Folk Art BOM -- the appliquéd center, appliquéd
borders and Log Cabin
cornerstones are to be worked on throughout the year.
A Few Hints:
-
For accuracy, I like to add one inch to the measurements of my half-square
triangle units instead of the mathematical 7/8". I piece and press them open,
and then trim them down to a perfect size.
-
Cut your borders first from the tone on tone print so that you don't
have to piece them later. Cut them 8" wide and 35" long. (You can
trim them to the actual measurements of 31 - 1/2" X 7 1/2" after you have
completed the appliqué .) If you have a one way fabric, you can cut
two borders with the grain of the fabric and two borders across grain so
that the design will all be going the same direction. *An additional hint:
when adding borders, always measure through the center of your piece to get
an accurate measurement. Never just sew an undetermined length to the side
of your quilt, or your edges will be wavy. Judges notice this.
-
"Measure twice; cut once."
