Choose three fabrics, a light, a medium, a dark.

You will need:

Light fabric:

  • Section A -- Cut 4 rectangles 1 1/2" x 3 1/2 "
  • Section E -- Cut 8 squares 1 7/8 ". These will be cut in half diagonally to make 16 triangles.
  • Section C -- Cut 4 squares 1 1/2"

Medium fabric:

  • Section D -- Cut 4 squares 2 1/2"

Dark fabric:

  • Section B -- Cut 8 squares 1 7/8". These will be cut in half diagonally to make 16 triangles.
  • Section F -- Cut 1 square 1 1/2".

Directions for sewing: (All seams are 1/4 ".)

Sew the 16 light E triangles to the 16 dark B triangles.
Press to the dark fabric.  Trim off the little ears that extend beyond the half-square triangle blocks.

a. Join one light C -- 1 1/2" square to two of the above half-square triangle blocks. See the diagram for placement.

b. Join two more half-square triangle blocks.

c. Then join this two block unit to one medium fabric D-- 2 1/2" square.

d. Join this unit to the unit made in a. You now have one paw completed. Press the seams to D.

e. Repeat steps a-d to make the other three paws.

f. Join a paw unit to a long light rectangle A -- (1 1/2" x 3 1/2" ), then add another paw. Check diagram for proper placement and orientation of your units.

g. Repeat step f to make an identical unit.

h. Join one light rectangle A-- to one dark square F-- (1 1/2"), then add the other light rectangle A.

i. Join this unit to the two-paw unit.

j. Add the bottom two-paw unit.

That should do it, one completed Bear Paw block!

*Note: There are many ways to make 1/2 square triangles,
you may wish to use an alternate method than that stated here.
