Choose three fabrics, a light, a medium, a dark.

You will need:

Light fabric:

  • Section A--Cut 2 rectangles 1 1/2" x 3 1/2"
  • Section B -- Cut 8 squares 1 7/8". These are cut in half diagonally to make 16 triangles
  • Section C -- Cut 4 squares 1 1/2 "
  • Section D -- Cut 1 rectangle 1 1/2 " x 7 1/2"

Medium fabric:

  • Section E -- Cut 4 rectangles 1 1/2 x 2 1/2".
  • Section F -- Cut 4 squares 1 1/2"

Dark fabric:

  • Section G -- Cut 8 squares 1 7/8". These are cut in half diagonally to make 16 triangles.
  • Section H --Cut 4 stems to be appliqued on a Section C square.

Directions for sewing: (All seams are 1/4 ".)

  1. Sew the 16 light B triangles to the 16 dark G triangles.
    Press to the dark side. Trim off the little ears that extend beyond the half square blocks.
  2. Join two half square triangles to one section C light square.
  3. Join one half square triangle to one section E medium rectangle.
  4. Appliqué dark stem H to a section C light square. (Printable template above)
  5. Join one half square triangle to a medium section F, then add the appliqued stem square.
  6. Join the three units just made, check diagram for placement.
  7. Repeat the above to make 3 more leaf units.
  8. Add section A light rectangle between two of leaf sections.
  9. Repeat h, for bottom half of block.
  10. Join top two leaf section to light section D rectangle.
  11. Add bottom two-leaf unit.


*Note: There are many ways to make 1/2 square triangles,
you may wish to use an alternate method than that stated here.
