Choose three fabrics, a light, a medium, and a dark.

You will need:

Light fabric:

  • Section A -- Cut 1 square 6 1/8". This will be cut in half diagonally to make 2 triangles. You will only use 1.
  • Section B--Cut 1 square 4 3/8". This will be cut in half diagonally to make 2 triangles. You will only use 1.
  • Section C -- Cut 2 rectangles 4" x 2 1/4".

Medium fabric:

  • Section D -- Cut 2 squares 2 5/8". These are cut in half diagonally to make 4 half-square triangles.
  • Section E -- Cut 2 squares 2 1/4".
  • Handle -- Bias-cut 3/4" wide - 1" wide x 7 1/2".  
                    Or can fuse handle by cutting template from Handle placement.  
                    Also see ***Note  below.

Dark fabric:

  • Section F -- Cut 1 square 2 1/4". .
  • Section G -- Cut 1 square 2 5/8". This is cut in half diagonally to make 2 half-square triangles. You will only use 1.

***Note -- handle can be cut from Medium Fabric or Dark Fabric

Directions for sewing: (All seams are 1/4 ".)

**Pay close attention to the exploded block for placement of pieces.

  • a. Join 1 section G dark triangle to 1 medium section E square.
  • b. Join 1 section D medium triangle to 1 medium section E square.
  • c. To the unit just formed in step b. add 1 dark, section F square.
  • d. To the unit formed in a. add 1 medium section D triangle to the left of the square. (See diagram)
  • e. Join the unit formed in step d. to the unit formed in step c.
  • f. Join 1 light section C rectangle to 1 medium section D triangle.
  • g. Repeat step f. taking careful note of the placement of the triangle. (Check exploded diagram).
  • h. Join the above two units to each side of the basket to form the base.
  • i. Applique handle of basket to section A light triangle.
       Or fuse handle and zig-zag or buttonhole stitch around.
  • j. Join the unit formed in i. To the top of the basket.
  • k. Join the section B light triangle to the bottom of the basket.

This completes the basket block! Doesn't it make you think of Spring?


*Note: There are many ways to make 1/2 square triangles,
you may wish to use an alternate method than that stated here.
