Choose 4 fabrics -- Light, Medium 1, Medium 2, Dark

You will need:

Light fabric

  • Section A -- Cut 2 Squares -- 2 5/8", cut in half diagonally to make 4 half-square triangles.
  • Section C -- Cut 4 Rectangles -- 2 1/4" x 4"

Medium 1 fabric

  • Section B -- Cut 2 Squares 2 5/8", cut in half diagonally to make 4 half-square triangles.
  • Section E -- Cut 4 Squares 2 1/4"

Medium 2  fabric

  • Section F -- Cut 1 Square -- 4"

Dark fabric

  • Section D -- Cut 8 Squares 2 1/4"

Directions for sewing: (All seams are 1/4 ".)
**Pay close attention to the exploded block for placement of pieces.

  • Join the Light Section A triangles to the Medium 1 Section B triangles to make 4 half-square blocks.
  • Position a Dark Section D square, on the corner of a Light Section C rectangle. Draw a diagonal line on the dark Section D square. Stitch on the line. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4 inch and press. Repeat this process at the opposite corner of the rectangle. This will form the flying geese unit. Repeat this process for the other 3 Light Section C rectangles to make three more flying geese units.  See Block 8 for construction of Flying Geese units.
  • Position the 4 Medium 1 Section E squares on the sides of the Medium 2 Section F square. Draw the diagonal line, stitch on the line, trim the seam to 1/4".  See Block 8 for construction of middle square unit.

Assembling the Block

  • Sew a half-square block to a flying geese unit, then add another half-square unit.
  • Sew a flying geese unit, to the middle square unit, then add another flying geese unit.
  • Sew a half-square block to a flying geese unit, then add another half-square unit.
  • Sew the units together.

Voila, Block Number 9 is now completed!

Hope you are enjoying this as much as I am. Only a few more to go.

*Note: There are many ways to make 1/2 square triangles,
you may wish to use an alternate method than that stated here.
For example, Thangles, Triangles on a roll, or check these websites for additional information:
