Folk Art Intermediate BOM - Rotary Cut

Appliquéd center block
Appliquéd borders
Log Cabin cornerstones (for border)

For the Folk Art BOM -- the appliquéd center, appliquéd borders and Log Cabin
cornerstones are to be worked on throughout the year.

A Few Hints:

  • If hearts are cut out on the bias of the fabric, they are easier to appliqué .
  • I cut my stems on the bias in 7/8" wide strips. Fold them in half and press. Appliqué the folded edge to the marked 7" circle pattern, then fold the other side under and appliqué it to the outside of the circle.
  • You will need a 7" circle pattern for the center wreath. Check out your luncheon size plates. Most of them are 7" in diameter.
  • Cut your borders first from the tone on tone print so that you don't have to piece them later. Cut them 8" wide and 35" long. (You can trim them to the actual measurements of 31 - 1/2" X 7 1/2" after you have completed the appliqué .) If you have a one way fabric, you can cut two borders with the grain of the fabric and two borders across grain so that the design will all be going the same direction. *An additional hint: when adding borders, always measure through the center of your piece to get an accurate measurement. Never just sew an undetermined length to the side of your quilt, or your edges will be wavy. Judges notice this.
  • "Measure twice; cut once."

Did you prewash & press all your fabrics?

Appliqued Center Block

1. Cut one 15 1/2" square of solid fabric.

2. Cut four 8" squares of the matching tone on tone print fabric. On the wrong side of these 8" squares, mark a diagonal sewing line from corner to corner.

3. Place one 8" square in the exact corner of the 15 1/2" square, right sides together, with the diagonal mark going diagonally across the corner. Sew on this line, then trim 1/4" seam away from the outside edge of this sewn diagonal line. Open and press. Work the next corner, diagonally across from the one you just completed in the same manner, then work the other two corners. You should have a perfect 15 1/2" diamond in the square block (including seam allowances).

4. Mark a 7" circle in the center of the block for the stems. Using the smaller flower pattern, applique the flowers and leaves as shown in graphic at left.

HL - Heart large
L - Leaf
Fs - Flower small

5. To place the corner hearts (refer to the graphic at left), make a dot 1" from the seam line in the center of the triangles. This will be where you will place the point of the larger heart pattern and both leaves.

Border Pattern
Refer to diagram below for placement . Appliqué flowers, leaves and hearts to the border fabric -- centering the FL (Large Flower) in the border strip that you cut 8"wide x 50" long.

If you wish to have a mirrored image of swag on opposite sides of quilt, then turn the printed page over and look through the paper to see the mirrored image.  Can draw this mirrored image by holding paper up to a light source and tracing the outline from the unprinted side of paper.
Length of swag appliqué (25 ½") is approximate.

Trim down the appliquéd border to fit your quilt, after you have finished the appliqué.

FL - Flower large - 1 5/8" center
Fs - Flower small - 1¼" center
Hs - Heart small
