To fabricate the new chassis to hold the Atlas Rivarossi parts, I used two strips of 1/16 inch brass and 3/32 inch stock to create spacers between them. First I drilled holes through the two 1/16" strips for screws to hold them together. On one side I tapped them for the screws and on the other enlarged them for clearance holes. After screwing the two pieces together side by side, I marked off the location for the spur gear axle and the wheel axles. I drill these though both pieces. Next I cut two pieces of 3/32" stock to fit at each end to hold the side strips apart and allow clearance in between for all the gears. Clearance holes were drilled in the spacers for the screws that passed between side strips. I then machined the top and bottom of the sandwich to the correct profile to accept the pilot, steam saddle, valve gear and pilot and trailing trucks. Next I drilled and tapped mounting holes to hold the various attachments. After de-buring the parts and blackening them with "Gun Blueing" I assembled them with the gears inside. The wheels were pressed on with correct quartering and the side rods were attached.
