Bryar
A nervous, balding man with a scroll of paper poked his head inside
the throne room door and anxiously looked around. Then, with a deep
breath to steady himself, for he knew the king would not be happy with
the news he brought,he pushed the door all the way open and strode
briskly towards the King of Sarence, King Damon. He stopped at the foot
of the pedestal on which the King sat with his wife, Queen Serenity,
and bowed deeply.
“ Your Majesties.” He murmured reverentially
“ Oh stop it, what news have you?” the King ordered in a commanding
voice. Feeling a bit foolish, the man straightened up quickly and
cleared his throat.
“ Nothing good, I fear, my sire.” He swiftly unrolled the scroll he
held. “Griffons are closing in on the Southern border, trolls and
gremlins have banded together North of here, and several turned
unicorns were spotted flying over the Clemson Sea.” The King grimaced, a
frown turning down his naturally smiling lips.
“And what of the child?”
“ We have not yet found the child, sire. I’ve had our men examine all
children between the ages of 4 and 17 in the city of Chapran and all
it’s surrounding cities.”
“ You’ve checked every child?Everywhere?”
“ Yes sire, in every home and on all the streets.”
“ Have you looked in the orphanages?” The courier, for that’s what he
was, was silent. A sheepish look crept slowly across his face.
“N nooo.” Anger exploded in King Damon’s eyes.
“ You fool! Did you not think about all the children there?” He threw
his hands up in the air in exasperation. “ Oui, I’m surrounded by
fools.” Queen Serenity patted the arm of her King.
“ I know dear.” She temporized. To the courier, who at the moment was
looking extremely dejected, she implored. “ Will you go to all the
orphanages in the country? It’s very important you find this child. It’s
the only way to win the war with the immortals.
” Yes, your majesty.” answered the man, looking infitmisly relieved.
“ Go then, and find the Child who will save us all.” The queen turned
back to her lover, talking soothingly as the courier slipped out of the
throne room.
When Bryar first arrived at Farrence Orphanage after his parents died,
he was indifferent to the other children. He regarded them with
irritation, and wasn’t very tolerant of jokes. It didn’t help much that
he was easily provoked. There was only one boy who didn’t give up when
Bryar shunned him. When Bryar built a wall inside himself to keep the
boy, who’s name was Ashlan, away, Ash grabbed a rope and climbed that
wall.He wore down the other boy’s reserves until, finally,Bryar sighed
and said, “You ain’t gonna give up ‘till I like you, are you?”
Nope. I like stubborn, rude old codfishes.”Ash admitted, grinning. The
other boy just looked at Ash. Slowly, a small smile found it’s way onto
Bryar’s lips. Ash beamed and laughed. Bryar did the same. At the time
they were only five, but they had unknownly started a friendship that
would last for life.
A tall, blonde haired boy burst into a bedroom, panting hard. The
occupant of the room, a dark haired lad with golden brown skin, looked
up startled, from the book he had been reading. Realizing who it was ,
the boy grinned, set the book down, and pulled himself up into a sitting
position on the bed. “What is it this time Ash?”
Ash grinned at his best friend Bryar, his silver gray eyes shining,
and motioned for him to wait while he caught his breath.
“Well, I was in the office...” Bryar broke in,
“ You got in trouble again?”
“Yes, but that’s beside the .” Ash said, flapping his hand dismissivly.
“ Anyway, I was in the office and I overheard...”
“ Don’t you mean eavesdropped?”
“ Will you stop interrupting me?” He paused, waited for another snide
reply. Getting none, he continued, “ I overheard that the King’s
soldiers are coming here tomorrow. They’re going to interview all the
kids . I guess that they’re looking for some prophesied child who can
help win the war against all the immortals.” Ash paused to catch his
breath and to see what his friend’s reaction would be. Bryar was quiet,
his face revealed nothing as he turned over that bit of information in
his mind. Finally, he asked, “ Do they think the kid is hear?”
“ They don’t know. The soldiers are checking every orphanage around
hear. Ours is just one of them. I think they’re even bringing a real
live sorcerer with them, a master at that”
“ Wow. I wonder if anyone here is the person.” Bryar said.
“ What if,” Ash whispered, “what if it’s one of us?” the two lads
looked at each other, wide eyed.
“ I guess we’ll just have to wait and find out.” Bryar said, a small
quaver of excitement sounding in his voice.
Two weeks later, a mysterious man surrounded by a small squadron of
soldiers arrived at Farrence Orphanage. It was the long awaited group
who was to interview the kids. The mysterious man was Thornfire, a mage.
He quickly set up an office in a room that wasn’t being used. Then he
started calling in children, starting from the youngest. On the second
day of interviewing, he called out,
Please bring in...” He looked down at a stack of papers, “...Bryar
Fairchild.” The door opened and a young man walked in and sat on a
chair. Master Thornfire looked up from his papers. His eyes widened
involuntarily. This child was obviously different from the rest.He had
almost an aura around him.Quickly he looked back down at his papers but
it was too late. The boy’s face was permanently burned into his mind.
“Y you wanted t to interview me?” Bryar stammered. He was unnerved by
this man.
“ Yes, I’d like you to just close your eyes and clear your mind.” The
lad did as he was told. Thornfire place a hand lightly on top of Bryar’s
soft black hair. Then he reached inside of the boy, his magic curled
like tiny tendrils around hidden parts of the boy’s mind. He searched
and came across what he was looking for. Thornfire smiled. He had known
when he saw this young man that he was the one. He took his hand off
Bryar’s forehead and smiled. “Congratulations Bryar. Your the one we’ve
been looking for.” The boy opened his eyes and just stared at him.
Plans were made that very day for Bryar to leave the orphanage. He
didn’t mind going. In fact, the only thing he would miss was Ash. He had
been Bryar’s only friend for most of his life. He decided to do
something about it. He walked up to Thornfire, who was busy giving
instructions to one of the soldiers.
“ S’cuse me, sir?”
“ Yes, what is it?”Bryar looked up at the man with cool eyes. Thornfire
realized they were an unusual color of lime green.
“ I want to bring my friend Ash with us.” Thornfire raised an eyebrow.
“ And if he doesn’t?”Bryar took a deep breath and replied,
“ If he don’t go, I don’t go.”
“ Oh really.”
“ Yes really.”Thornfire thought about it for a minute.
“Oh , all right. As long as he doesn’t get in the way.” Bryar beamed
and ran off to find his friend. Thornfire smiled and got back to work.
“ Your Majesty, we have found the child.” The balding courier
announced.
“Good, where is he?”
“He’s here sire. I’ll fetch him right away. I believe he is unpacking
right now.”
“Yes, you do that.” the king said condescendingly.
“Yes sire,” The courier hurried of to find the prophesied boy. He found
Bryar unpacking in his room while his friend that had come with him
talked.
“...can’t believe that we’re actually in the palace!” The courier
cleared his throat and the boys looked over at him. He smiled at them
and said,
“Hello boys, my name’s Caleb. I’m supposed to take you to the king now.
Are you ready?” The two boys looked at each other.
“Now’s as good as time as any.” Bryar and Ash followed Caleb out of the
room.
Bryar walked into the throne room. He had to fight to keep his
composure. He may only have been thirteen but he still knew that to be
called in front of the king and queen was a great honor. “ So,” King
Damon said, “You are the boy who we’ve been looking for.”
“ Yes your majesty.”
“ Oh please, call me Damon. What is your name, and who is this with
you?”
“My name’s Bryar Fairchild.”
“And I am Ash Yovish.” The queen, who sat by King Damon, regarded the
two boys. She smiled.
“ My name is Serenity.”
“It’s nice to meet you, your majesties. May I ask though, why I’m here?
I know I’m the chosen one or something but what am I supposed to do?”
The king and queen looked at each other. Serenity patted her leg.
“ Come dears, sit by my side, for we have much to talk about.” The boys
did as they were told.
“ So you see, when Master Thornfire found a book of prophesies, you can
just imagine our elation. It took us quite a while to interpret it. The
book was written in Gaelic. But then we made our best discovery yet. We
found this riddle:
When time is short and the dangers great
When the immortals come bringing impending fate
One child, fair in face and mind
Coming from the Gods divine
Forgotten wisdom from it’s lip
Will save us from immortal grip.
Well, after that we sent out Thornfire to search every child in the
kingdom. And here you are.” Queen Serenity patted the thirteen year
old’s dark head. “Quite a story, is it not?” Bryar looked up at her with
confused green eyes. He scrunched up his nose, making him self look like
a rabbit.
“What if I don’t want to save the world. I mean ,” he continued
hurriedly when he saw an angry glint in the king’s eyes, “ I don’t mind
fighting but I don’t have magic. I think you got the wrong kid.”
“ No child, Thornfire would not make a mistake.”
“ But I told you,” he insisted, pulling away from Serenity’s comforting
arm. “I don’t have any magic. I can’t do what you want me to.” With
that, he stood up to go.
“Now just a minute young man. Stop this nonsense right now and sit
down.” The king boomed. Bryar stayed standing, defiance shining brightly
in in his eyes. His hands were clenched by his side.
“SIT DOWN!” King Damon bellowed. He sat. “Now, I want to hear any more
nonsense about not being the child we need. You are, deal with it.”
Bryar looked down at his hands.
“But your Highness, I don’t know how to help.” Serenity giggled.
“ Silly boy! did you not listen to the riddle?” She quoted, “ Forgotten
wisdom From it’s lip, will save us from immortal grip.” The two boys
simply looked confused. “Of course your not going to know what to do.
The information is hidden,” She tapped his head, “ up here. All we have
to do is tap into it. Master Starkestral, our mind analyzer, will take
care of that. Actually, your to meet him after we’re done here.”
“ And are you done here? I have much to do if I’m to get any
information from the boy.”, purred a silky smooth voice from the corner
of the room. The Majesties and children alike turned to behold a tall
lanky man leaning casually against th door frame.
“ Ah, Starkestral. Impatient as ever. Yes, I believe we are done here.
Do you have any more questions?” Bryar shook his head but Ash inquired,
“Can I go with him?” Starkestral smiled.
“ Yes, you may.” Ash grinned.
“Cool!”Confusion swept across the Master’s face
“ Cool?” He asked inquisitively. “ And that would mean...” Both boys
looked at each other and snickered.
“ It means good.” they answered in unison.
“ Oh, well then. Shall we be off?” Starkestral held out his hands and
the boys took them. With mock sombernous he remarked, “ Scorching.” All
three chuckled as they walked out of the room.
“You should probably lay down and get comfortable. This may take a
while. Now, I require complete silence once I have begun. Ash, if you
get bored, you may slip out of here but do not, I repeat,Do Not make
any noise.
“Okay.” Ash murmured. “ What’re you going to do to Bryar.”
“ Yeah, what are you going to do to me?” Bryar asked. He was a bit
spooked. He didn’t like it when people brought him into a darkened room
and told him to lay down and be quiet. Still, he trusted this man and
Ash would be here with him. He sat down on the couch.
“ Relax, this isn’t going to hurt. I’m going to hypnotize you. You’ve
got some strong blocks in your mind, ones that Master Thornfire couldn’t
break. I’m more specialized at this kind of thing. It’s my job to break
all those blocks and get the answers we need. Now just lay down on your
back , hands down at your side.” Bryar did as he was told and then
closed his eyes. The mage sat in the chair that was pulled up next to
the couch, and put a finger on each side of Bryar’s head, on his
temples. He massaged them gently as he began to speak that soft calming
purr of his. “ Okay Bryar, your feeling very calm and tranquil.” Bryar
cracked one eye open and looked up at him.
“ What’s tran... Tranwhatever?” He asked inquisitively. The mage
sighed.
“ Basically it means your placid.”
“Huh?”
“ You feel soothed, peaceful, okay? Now may I continue please?”
“ Oh, okay, sure.” Bryar closed his eyes again.
“ Thank you. As I was saying, you are feeling calm and tranquil.
Imagine that all your thoughts are flying out of your head. Now you are
feeling very tired, sleepy. Your very drowsy and...” Bryar fell asleep.
Ash forced himself to keep his eyes open. The man, No Starkestral. he
thought, had been at it for hours. So far all he had succeeded in
finding out was that Bryar didn’t like meat and that shoes bothered him.
Ash started to drowse again.
He was awakened by a sob. Ash looked up to see his friend curled up in
a little ball, whimpering quietly. His cheeks were wet with tears
and he was whispering something over and over. The sorcerer was leaning
over him, trying to keep his voice composed as he frantically whispered
soothing nonsense to the delirious boy.
“ What’d you do to my friend?!” Ash exploded. He was angry and scared.
He’d never seen Bryar break composure before. Even when the two boys had
run away from the orphanage and Bryar had fallen and broken his ankle.
His friend had had to walk the two miles back to the orphanage to get
treatment but he still hadn’t cried. The mage turned towArd the
frightened boy and put a finger to his lips.
“ Shhhhh! If he wakes up it could damage him permanently!” Starkestral
hissed furiously. Ash was quiet for a second, then hissed back at him,
“ What’d you do to him?”
“ I told you, to get the information on how to beat the immortals, I
have to break all the blocks in his mind. Including the ones he set
there himself!” Ash looked into the man’s eyes. They were tired and
bloodshot. This is really taking a lot out of him. the boy realized. He
looked down at his friend, who was still whispering something. He
dropped to his knees to hear what was tormenting Bryar so.
“I promise papa, I won’t do it again. Just please don’t hit me.
Please.” He pleaded. Ash stood up again.
I can’t stay here any longer. Tell me when it’s over.” With that said,
he turned and fled the room.
Several hours later, Bryar and Starkestral emerged from the room. The
boys face was pale and drawn, the mage looked absolutely exhausted.
Starkestral walked the boy to his room. When he opened the door, Ash
immediately came over to Bryar. “ Are you okay? Bryar nodded and
collapsed onto his bed. He was asleep before his head even hit the
pillow. When Ash looked back at the mage, the man held up a scroll. I
found the secret. I must report my findings to the king and his council
immediately.” At the young man’s worried look, he added, “ Do not be
afraid. Bryar’s secret stays between you, me and him. Now go to bed.
It’s past midnight.” Ash nodded and turned to ready himself for bed.
Starkestral turned and left the room in search of King Damon.
When Bryar woke up the nest morning, his face felt puffy, his eyes
burned, and he felt terrible. He turned over onto his back and groaned.
He felt much like he had when he and Ash had found the orphanage
master’s brandy and decided to have some fun. Ash called out cheerfully
from the table where he was eating his breakfast. “Wakey, Wakey, eggs
and bacy. G’ mornin’ Sleeping Beauty.”
“What time is it?”
“Almost 12:00.” Ash replied, as he brought over a cup of coffee. “
Here, drink this. It’ll make you feel better.” Instead, Bryar flopped
back over onto his stomach. “ Come on sleepy head! Up and At ‘em!” Ash
pulled at the back of Bryar’s rumpled tunic. “ You slept in your clothes
you know.”
“So?”
“Don’t you want to know how we’re going to beat the immortals?”That
woke the sleepy boy up. He took the cup of coffee and took a sip. He
grimaced, then said,
“It worked?”
“ They think so.” Reluctantly he got of the bed and started to get
ready for the day. “That’s much better.” Ash said in parental smirk.
Once both boys were dressed in fresh tunics that were jewel green, and
breeches, they made their way to the throne room. They were surprised to
see that the royal couple was not there.
“ If yer lookin’ fer their Majesties, they in in th’ library.” They
turned to see who had spoken. It was a servant. “ Ye better be on yer
way, their Majesties is lookin’ fer ye.” They thanked the man and were
on their way.
When the boys got to the library, they were greeted by Starkestral.
“Good morning, or should I say afternoon you two.” The lads blushed and
looked down at that remark. To Bryar, the mage said, “ Glad to see you
up and about. If you don’t mind though, I’d like to check you to see if
there was any long term,er, damage.” He led Bryar over to a chair and
sat him down. He waved hello to the king and queen, who were sitting in
chairs opposite of his.
“ Hello dear, how are you feeling?” asked Serenity.
“ Oh, I’m oka..ah ahh.” Starkestral had opened his mouth to peer in at
his tonsils. When he was done he looked into his eyes and Bryar
continued. “I’m fine. A bit tired, but fine.” Starkestral took his wrist
and felt his pulse.
“ You seem fine.” He said, satisfied.
“ That’s good. We have a lot to talk about and it would never do to
have you sick. Now, Both you boys come over to the table and we’ll
explain our plan.
The plan was simple really, to beat the immortals, they had to find a
dragon who still was good. Then, that dragon must willingly give up a
drop of his blood. Somehow, they had to get the queen of Immortals,
Elvensbane, to drink it. It would not kill her of course, but it would
make her more reasonable when it came to writing up a peace treaty.
“That sounds pretty hard to me.” Bryar remarked.
“Well, the hardest part, actually getting the dragon’s blood, has
already been taken care of. A dragon near by owes me a boon. This was
it. We are sending Thornfi re to put the blood into Elvenbane’s drink.
Hopefully he will be successful.”
“Oh.” Bryar said. “ And the fighting will end?
“ Yes, she will be overcome with the desire for peace.” King Damon
responded.
“I thought that dragons were warful beasts?” Ash asked. “ Wouldn’t it
do the opposite?”
“Magic has strange qualities. Sometimes things make no sense but they
work.” The voice was familiar to the boys and as they turned around,
they saw why. It was Thornfire, but he did not look the same as he had
the last time they saw him. He was decked out in armor, compared to the
long robe he and Starkestral both wore. He smiled at Bryar and Ash then
turned to the king. “ I’m ready to leave your highness, Do you have any
extra instructions?”
No. Go and God’s Speed to you. Come back safely” The two men embraced.
Bryar hadn’t known that the two men had been good friends.
“Good bye.” Ash said. “ Good luck.” Thornfire went to the boy and
squeezed the boy’s shoulder. The he turned to Bryar.
“Thank you. I hope I get to know you better. Your an extraordinary
boy.” He squeezed his shoulder. As he did,Bryar got a curious
sensation. It was like he could see an aura around everyone. There was a
large grey green one around the queen, a white one around the king, but
it was smaller, it didn’t show as brightly around him.Starkestral’s aura
almost blinded him, and Ash’s barely showed at all. He had a feeling
that what he was seeing was magic. He didn’t know how but he suspected
that Thornfire was showing it to him. He wondered why. He turned up to
look at Thornfire and almost gasped out loud. Thornfire’s aura was faded
and almost gone. And he looked tired. Thornfire took his hand off of
Bryar’s shoulder and started to walk away. The boy got up and ran after
him.
Bryar caught up to Thornfire out in the hall. “Thornfire!” he yelled.
The man turned around and Bryar was surprised to see that he could still
see the sorcerer”s aura. “What’s wrong with you? you’ve got no power
left in you.” The mage raised an eyebrow.
“What do you care?”he replied.
“ Well, I don’t want you to die or anything. How come you don’t have
any magic left?”
“If you must know, I spent much of it looking for you. Then, I had many
little spells here and there, and well, it all added up.”
Bryar walked over to him. “ Is there anything you can do? I’d give you
power if I could but I don’t have any power.”
“ Are you so sure about that?” Thornfire smiled a weary smile.
“yes, very sure.”
“I think if you looked inside yourself you’d say different.”
“What do you mean?” Bryar said suspiciously. The mage sighed.
“ You have magic.” Bryar just stared at the man. When Thornfire
started toward him, he backed up.
“No, no I don’t have any magic.” Thornfire reached out and grabbed his
wrists. He held up the boy’s hands in front of his face. There was a
faint but steady glow. It was the same green color of his eyes.
“ Didn’t you wonder why you could see auras? Only gifted people can see
auras.” Bryar wanted to cry, laugh, and hit Thornfire all at the same
time. Instead he yanked his hands from Thornfire’s grip and said,
“ How do I give you magic?”
Thornfire put his hands on Bryar’s slim shoulders. “Like this.” Bryar
felt the sorcerer reach inside him. He felt a tug, and the he could see
a thin green line connecting him to Thornfire. Gradually it grew thicker
and brighter. After a few minutes which seemed like hours, the mage
released his grip on the boy. “ Thank you. That was what I needed.”
Bryar looked dazed as he whispered,
“No problem. Good luck” Then the lad turned and went back into the
library.
“ Good bye.” Thornfire turned and left to find his horse.
Bryar looked out the window of his room. He hadn’t felt very good for a
few days so the queen had sent him to his room to rest. For a while he
had slept, but now he was restless. He kept on getting strange
feelings, ones that he knew weren’t his.Why should he feel fear, or
courage, or depression. All he was doing was sitting in his room and
watching his friend Ash court a girl down in the courtyard.Ash was
trying to impress the girl by doing head stands but he wasn’t much of an
acrobat. He kept falling down. It was almost disgusting how his friend
was making a fool out of him self. Bryar wished he were down there too.
Frustrated, and not knowing why he felt sudden, terrible fear, he pushed
his chair back from the window and stood up. As he did, he was over come
with a sudden pain on the side of his head. Black and red dots swirled
in his eyesight as he swayed.Slowly they melted into a dark grey. His
last thought before the gray swallowed him whole was Ash isn’t gonna
like this.
Bryar was dreaming. He knew this but he also knew what he dreamt was
real. He was in a tiny room somewhere, he wasn’t sure where. There
wasn’t’ much room but there was a small bed. Someone was lying on it and
there was a woman leaning over him. She pulled back from wiping his
forehead with a warm washcloth.
“Good, your awake. That’s some bump on you got there.” Bryar walked
over to see who her patient was. It was Thornfire. Bryar nodded grimly.
He had thought as much. When he gave Thornfire his magic, something must
have happened that linked them together. He had fallen unconscious when
the mage had and that allowed him to see what was happening. Bryar
turned back to the mage and the woman.
“...name is Shadow Golden. What’s yours?” The woman had asked. Thorn
fire smiled at her.
“My name is Thornfire. It’s nice to meet you Shadow. So, how is the
bump on my head?”
It’s doing okay. A few more days of bedrest won’t hurt you though. Mind
if I ask how you got it though?”
“Thornfire smiled again. “ I was fighting immortals and they got the
best of me.I’m surprised they didn’t kill me. Perhaps they thought I was
already dead. How did you find me? A pretty woman like you shouldn’t be
out in the forest...”
Oh brother, he thought. Now their going to flirt. He sat down to wait.
Ash came up the stairs, whistling. He had just met the nicest girl. Her
name was Chasidy and she was really beautiful. He couldn’t wait to tell
Bryar. He felt bad for his friend. He’d been feeling ill the past few
days and was stuck up in their room. He would have loved meeting those
girls. Ash thought. Oh well, when he’s feeling better, I’ll introduce
him to Independence. He’ll like her. He was at the door of their room
now.
“Bryar, I’ve got some great ...” He stopped in mid sentence. “Bryar!”
he yelled. His friend was lying on the floor, unmoving. He ran over to
him and turned him over. He felt his pulse, just like MasterStarkestral
had showed him how to. Ash breathed a sigh of relief. Bryar was still
alive at least. Hold on Bryar, I getting help so just hold on. He
thought grimly. Then he ran to find Starkestral.
It had been two days now and finally Thornfire was saying goodbye to
Shadow. He had to go he explained. No he couldn’t tell her why, just
that it was a matter of great importance. She cried a bit but then gave
him a satchel full of food to take with him. They kissed goodbye and
then he rode off to continue his journey. About time. Bryar thought to
himself. This is just about the most boring dream I’ve ever had. All
they did was smooch and play puppy love. maybe now Thornfire can get on
with his journey and it will be more fun. After they left Shadow’s
cabin, it did get slightly more interesting. Soon after they stared out,
they met more immortals. This time Thornfire won. As they got closer to
the war, there were more skirmishes, more battles. Thornfire continued
to win. It took eight days to reach the Immortal Queen’s castle. Once
there, Thornfire had to be very sneaky. He did manage to get by the
guards with only a mishap or two. Those were easily squashed. Literally.
Finally, Thornfire made it to the kitchen. Bryar was with him through
all this. He was with him when he found Elvensbane’s cup and put the
dragon’s blood into it. He saw when Thornfire tried to sneak out of the
castle and was spotted by a griffin. And he was there when Thornfire was
thrown into the dungeon to wait.Wait to live, wait to die, neither of
them was sure. But Bryar was also there when the mage was taken out of
the dungeon and escorted to the queen’s crumbling throne room. It was
there that they drew up a peace treaty between the immortals and and
the humans. Queen Elvensbane had drunk her dragons blood tea. It was
then, after the queen had signed the treaty, that Bryar felt his grip on
the dream start to slip. The edges started to blur and things became
unclear. Bryar tried to hold on, but he couldn’t. Resignedly he let the
vision fade.
Bryar opened his eyes and looked around. He felt a grip on his hand and
looked down to see his hand intertwined with Ash’s. The other boy was
asleep. Bryar sat up and shook his friend. “Up and at ‘em!” Ash looked
up sleepily and Bryar enjoyed seeing his face turn from confusion to
astonishment to pure joy. Ash leapt up and threw his arms around Bryar.
“ Don’t you ever do that again! Ever, you here me?” Ash yelled at him
“ Don’t worry, I don’t plan on it.” They hugged again.
It was two days later. Bryar had been unconscious for almost a fortnight
before he woke up. Everyone was interested to here his story and
relieved to know that the peace treaty had indeed been successfully
drawn up and signed. Of course Master Starkestral made him repeat every
detail of the story so it could be documented. Every thing would be
hectic for a while,Bryar realized. Peace was almost as complicated as
was. He and Ash would also be starting new lives as squires in the court
of King Damon. Bryar would also have magic lessons as soon as Thornfire
was well rested. For now though, he had a few extra minutes in which he
and Ash were spending lazing by the small pond which they had discovered
in the woods.
“Hey Bryar, I never told you about the girl I met,did I? Her names
Chasidy.”
“Really, That’s nice.” Bryar mumbled. The sun’s had had made him drowsy
and he was thinking more about taking a nap than what his friend was
saying.
“ Yeah, She has a friend named Independence too.” Ash said just a bit
too casually. Bryar cracked one eye open.
“So.”
“So here they come now. Now be nice, I think you’ll like her.” Bryar
sat up to see two Pretty young girls picking their way through the
bushes to the boys.
“You planned this didn’t you?
“Yup, me’n Chasidy. “ To the girls he yelled out, “Hi, glad you could
make it!”
Bryar groaned inside. Oh well, this could turn out to be a good thing.
He thought as they went to greet the girls.
