612th Field Artillery Battalion (Pack) WWII

Activated 17 Dec 43, Camp Gruber, OK. 1 Mar 44, transferred to Camp Carson, CO. A & C Btrys departed San Pedro, CA on 25 July 44 for Bombay India via Australia. H/S & B Btrys departed New Orleans with three boatloads of mules for Calcutta, India via Atlantic and Suez Canal.

At Mytikynia, Burma attached to the 475th Inf (Mars Task Force). Departed Camp Landis Burma 17 Nov 44 for mission behind Japs line. First combat a Tonkwa 13 Dec 44, end of battle 30 Dec 44. Depart Tonkwa 1 Jan 45 for march to Hosi Valley, arriving on 17 Jan 45. There shelled ver heavily until 6 Feb 45. Five men KIA. Depart Hosi Valley on 10 Feb 45 for march south to Lashio Burma. The march from Camp Landis to Lashio had been estimated at from 400 to 700 miles. 612th had auth 35 Officers, 455 EM and 330 mules.

April 45 612th was air lifted from Lashio to Kunming, China. There assigned to Hostel 9 FATC. Train Chinese artillery men on 105s. 612th was deactivated at Kunming on 8 Sept 45, men sent to units all over China, most EM were sent to Shanghai, MPs and QM. Men returned home late 45 and early 46.

The Mountain Artillery Assn (612th & 613th F A Bns) was formed in 1988 with first reunion at Dayton, Ohio.
