You want to buy a Pup?
So you have read all the books , made sure someone will be home all day for at least the first 6-12 months of the puppys life & found the local Kennel Club Obedience classes. The house & garden have been puppy proofed & you are prepared for sleepless nights, toilet training & all the changes that a puppy will bring.
How do you know when you have found the right breeder & what are the right questions to ask them to ensure you have bought a quality puppy from a reputable breeder?....
Questions to ask
1. How old was the bitch when she was mated?
Vizsla bitches should be over 2yrs old at time of mating/ GSP bitches should be over 2.5 yrs old.

2. How old is the Sire?
Dogs should be at least 18 - 24 months old.

3. Do you own both parents?
Normally you would not expect someone to own both parents unless they have been involved in the breed for 10yrs plus.

4. How long have you been in the breed?
Someone can not offer lifelong support to you if they have only been involved in the breed for a couple of years.

5. How many dogs of that breed do you own?
Normally you would expect someone to own just 1 or 2 dogs in that breed within the first 4-5yrs. It's unusual to find breeders who own many more dogs than they have years within the breed. Being over dogged in a short space of time is not a good sign.

6. How much does the puppy cost?
Expect to pay around £700/800 pounds for a Vizsla puppy & around £600 for a GSP pup. If the breeder is asking much less - check it is KC registered , chipped & insured etc.
If the breeder is asking alot  more money then ask why? Even a puppy that has 2 parents who are both Show Champions / Champions / Field Trial Champions is not vastly more expensive than the prices quoted above.

7. Are you members of the HVS , HVC ,GSPA & GSPC of Great Britain ?
All members are bound by the Breeding Code of Conduct that protects dogs from being bred at a young age or having more than one litter within a twelve month period. A bitch of 12 months old is at the same point of developent as a 3 year old child. You can report a breeder if you have concerns.

8. What are the hipscores of the mother & father? Have they also been heart tested &/or eye tested? Have the parents suffered with Epilepsy, OCD or Aggression issues?
Don't be afraid to ask for proof of health checks & ask about family inherited health issues. At least - both parents should be hipscored.

9. When can we come & meet you & all your dogs?
Be concerned if you are not allowed to meet all the breeders dogs. Ask why some are locked away if you only get to meet 1 dog when they own 3-4 dogs etc. If you are told 'Ohhhh some of the girls are in season,so you can't meet them' ask why not!!! Bitches being in season only need to be kept aware from boy dogs - not humans! You should visit the breeder twice at the very least if you wish to purchase a puppy from them. Any breeder worth their salt will be happy to open their home to you so you can get to know them , their dogs & the pup you are buying. Walks with the adult dogs to see how they act outside the home & around other walkers & their dogs is very telling.

10. what do i get for my money?
You have every right to expect that your puppy will be registered with the Kennel Club of Great Britain not other organisations. A good breeder will require you to sign a cotract stating that you understand your puppy has breeding restrictions & export restrictions - only the breeder can /will lift these restrictions under certain circumstances. The puppy should have bright ,clean eyes. A shiney coat. He/She should not smell dirty or have a dirty bottom. Ears should not be full of mites. No fleas should be on the pups coat. Stomach should not feel hard & look very round as this can be a sigh of worms , especially when the coat is scurfy too.
Your pup should idealy be chipped , tattooed or both , possibly DNA profiled. You should get 6 weeks free insurance & a puppy pack including food , diet sheet , worming sheet , pedigree & information on your puppy & it's developement.  You should have contact details of your breeder for future referance & some little goodies for your puppy.

11. When can i take my puppy home?
Expect to take your puppy home at 8 weeks of age. Don't accept a puppy that is younger than 7 weeks old as the pup will have problems interacting with other dogs if removed from his/her mother too early. This can cause no end of problems with socialisation skills.
