RELAY FOR LIFE is a 24-hour celebration of hope, progress and answers. It represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who still face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated . The power of Relay allows our community to grieve for those lost to cancer, support the continued fight against the disease and celebrate the lives of those who have survived.

RELAY RECIPE BOOK
We are creating a Relay Recipe Book. We will raise funds for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Humboldt County with a recipe book including your recipes and dedications to loved ones affected by the disease. Please submit your recipes for cooking, crafts, homemade gifts, bath products, home remedies, etc. Use your imagination! We want this book to be fun and interesting. Remember to include a dedication with your recipe contribution - that's what makes it special. Also include your name, address, phone and email so we can notify you when the recipe book is published and available for sale. The book should be ready in Winter 2004. Deadline for contributions is: June 30, 2004

Ceremony of Hope/Luminaria Ceremony is a testimony of support and encouragement for survivors and a testimony of love and remembrance for those no longer with us. It is my favorite part of Relay. The Ceremony of Hope is a signature activity of Relays For Life nationwide, and begins just after dark with the lighting of the luminarias. The glowing bags line the track and spell out "HOPE" in the stadium stands. Luminarias are those glowing bags that make up a big part of the Ceremony of Hope, and to the naked eye appear to be nothing more than paper bags filled with sand and candles. On closer examination they're actually like people, each with a name and a story to tell. Some represent loved ones actively fighting cancer, while others are for those who have emerged victorious. The messages are of encouragement and congratulations. Those that remain are in memory of loved ones who are no longer with us and stand as a testimony of love and remembrance. The messages are of caring and devotion, showing all of us that, though these people are gone, they are far from forgotten, and still loved very much. So at the Ceremony of Hope, consider the people each bag represents, and remember that even though you see sand and candles inside, they are really filled with love.

Those who have experienced the amazing Relay spirit come away with a sense of community and purpose to help in the fight against cancer. All of us have been touched in some way by the disease, some more personally, but ALL of us can be part of the CURE.
