Jesse Perry was a wagonmaster of a "wagon train" from SC to AR. James L. Nelson, a widow, met the 4 unmarried
daughters and married Harriet Elizabeth on the way or after arriving in Drew County.
1850 census they were in Richland District, SC. The headstone of Zachariah Gibson says emigrated from SC to
AR 1853.

1860 census:

James died in 1862 leaving his 3 children from his first marriage and two by Harriet E. Elizabeth died shortly
after, leaving all the children in the care of Grandparents Jesse and Elizabeth Lauhon Perry. Soon after that
Jesse died, Elizabeth was left with 5 children and her own -- during the WBTS -- this was not easy. Elizabeth
had to "endenture" the Grandchildren that were not of her own blood. Samuel ran away --later married Margaret Emmer Montgomery of Drew Co--1880 Dallas Co--1900 Drew Co--Jenny lived with & assisted 2 Dr's, learned nursing
married a Wright then a Taylor. Billy never able to read or write. He lived with Jenny until he died in 1913

Jesse Perry posted Bond as Administrator of James L. Nelson estate, which was vested in Harriet E. Perry Nelson's
name on 20 July 1863, Final Probate of estate.

Fletcher Gibson
B. 1839 Fairfield District SC D. 15 March 1862 Atlanta Georgia
married 26 December 1860 Methodist Episcopal Church in Barkada, AR
Nancy Jane Perry
B. 21 February 1845 D. 23 September 1910 Rock Springs, AR

Fletcher left for"Soldier" in the war Between the States (1861) when Nancy Jane was 16 and 6 months pregnant with their first born. He wrote her from Pine Bluff, Little Rock, Corinth, MS, Pittmans Ferry, Missouri, Lydelle, Bowling Green & Horse Cave, KY as well as from the Nashville, TN Hospital. He speaks of her brother Daniel Perry, his sister Jemima's husband Silas Reuben Lauhon and several other locals from Drew County, Arkansas. His letters always revealed his love and loneliness for her(one night he went in his tent, knelt and cried) and his desire to see his first born. What joy he expressed at knowing that her "dread" was over and they had a whopping (big) baby boy. He asked her to call him Fletcher as he did not like the nick name Dan and if Daniel was the first name , he would surely be called that. So she named him Fletcher Daniel Myers Gibson.

Pvt. Fletcher Gibson of Company B 2nd Regt. AR CAV (Phifer's) never saw his son Fletcher Daniel Myers Gibson. He was one of literally thousands of soldiers, who being exposed to the world outside their country farms and the living conditions under which the soldiers lived, was sick and died in an Atlanta hospital. His military records on file at the Archives in Washington, DC merly states no cause, no personal belongings, no grave site.

Thus ended the life of my GGgrandfather Fletcher Gibson at the age of 21. Countless letters and inquiries have lead only to the same response...WE HAVE NO FURTHER INFORMATION. I have succeeded in securing a military headstone for him and a full military dedication will be conducted 17 October 1998 in the Andrews Chapel Cemetery Barkada, AR. This memorial headstone will be placed, next to that of his beloved Nancy Jane, wife of only 2 years, at no cost for the burial site as a result of the kindness of the Andrews Chapel Cemetery committee. (see recap of ceremony at the end of this html)

How many thousands of soldiers have such a story? What a tragedy to have so many of our young men killed and no records of where they lay or how long they lay before the death angel was merciful and released them from their suffering.

As my family participates in Civil War reenactments I feel a tickling in my spine to think that I am experiencing some of the history my ancestors experienced. To watch the reenactors as they re-live the historic moments is awinspiring. We participated (among others) in 1996 & 97 at Spring Hill (to include the battle of Franklin, TN where our 1st AR was so depleted); In 1997 at Muddy Shiloh; in 1998 at Gettysburg, where all three of our sons joined their Father & I to participate in the largest battle reenactment in history; and we are anticipating, 1999 at Chickamauga where another GGgrandfather from the 1st Ark Vol.(Feagan's) was shot in the knee on 20 Sept. 1864.

We can only hope by engaging in these reenactment we can help keep the true history alive for their memory.

A SUMMARY of the letters of GGgrandfather Fletcher Gibson to his beloved Nancy Jane Perry Gibson:

7-22-1861 Pine Bluff, to inform her that he has arrived at the Bluff and so has her brother Daniel(her brother).

7-27-1861 Little Rock, to inform her that he is at the Rock; has been for several days, provisions are scarce.

7-31-1861 Little Rock, to say he was examined and his property praised (no explaination) Write to Corinth, MS.

8-1-1861 Little Rock, He was proud that he has been sworn in the morning into the 6th ARK. BATALLION, CSA, Major Charles W. Phifer's CAV; Capt W.O. Ragland (of Monticello) CO A. Since they said in "GOD WE TRUST, surely HE would be on their side.

8-3-1861 Corinth, MS he states the trip by rail to Corinth, MS was an experience, but so fortunate as one train had wrecked head on into another. However, they were fine.

8-23-1861 Pocahontas, AR, Traveled all day with no food but did eat hardily at supper.

8-29-1861 Pittman's Ferry where he was on picket for 2 hours. The Yanks are about 30 miles from them.

9-16-1861 Silas & Daniel & company in "tollerably" good health. Lewis had the measles. They are 54 miles above the . . "Rock on their way to MO. What he would give to be with her. He had a jaw tooth pulled and will send it to . her.

9- -1861 just Missouri, he states he feels bad, he is wet and cold, there is a lot of snow. The camp is so wicked, as they have horse races on Sunday and gamble on everything. So busy, not much time to read his BIBLE.

9-18-1861 Lydell, KY, he states he has not heard from her in a while, and will send a shinny dollar that she must save for . postage, he asked a stranger for 5 cents to mail her letter and will do it as long as he belongs to Jeff Davis and . away from her.

9-19-1861 Lydelle, KY still no letter, how he wants to hear from her. Bill & Silas (Reuben Lauhon)

10-15-1861 Bowling Green, KY he states he was at Columbus and they had a 3 day rail trip. Very long. 35 Cavalrymen had a skermish with the YANKS and whipped them solidly.

10-19-1861 Horse Cave, KY he is now 30 miles north of Bowling Green, KY. How awfully lonesome he is for her, he went into his tent last night to pray and on his knees shed tears out of "lonesomeness" for her.

10-25-1861 Horse Cave, KY he had picket duty again last night; as there was nowhere else he just slept on the rocks.

10-29-1861 Cave City, KY he asks if she received the bonds he sent? He was so thankful for the blanket his father sent, he had been cold as his sleeping partner's bones are too sharp for him to get close to keep warm.

11-5-1861 Rock Hill, Station his duty last night was to take a prisoner to Brownsville KY he got soaked and today he has a sore throat. He will send her his tin type.

11-21-1861 Kentucky He received a letter that afforded his "great satisfaction". he weights 148 now.He had to trade her horse, Clark, as he could not do the work he was suppose to do. Please don't lend the buggy again, as Mr Davis will not repair it if it is broken.

11-23-1861 Rock Hill, Station again he went on Pickit, got another awful wetting; it made him sick. What a wicked camp. He thanked her for the clothes and if they had been much longer getting there, he would have none to wear.

12-08-1861 Kentucky, (no station) He is not well, 3 weeks with no letter. Its cold, snow and he has chills & fever off & on.

12-09-1861 Kentucky, FINALLY!!!NEWS OF THE BOY!!WOW SO BIG . Dr. Preston had doctored her for 9 mopnths so he must owe him a big bill, but he would bare it, cause now they have a Son.

no date Bowling Green, KY he feels better today, people in the hospital are good to them. He combed his hair & mustache today, as he felt better.

no date Bowling Green, KY he is back at camp now, he felt good for 3-4 days after the hospital, but is sick again with chills & fever.

12-261861 Nashville, TN the ladies of Nashville brought the patients at the Hospital real good food. He ate so hardily lists the food. Samuel & Bill send best Christmas wishes. How he would love to see that BOY.

1-1-1862 Nashville, TN his health is not good. He has been here in the Hospital for over a week and still no account--Just can't get "strait." How he longs to see Nancy Jane, who he calls "Miss Jane" & their son.

1-10-1862 Nashville, TN from the hospital, had a good meal, feels better. Her letter is at camp but he expects it soon. He frequently dreams of her and their son, Fletcher. He dreamed they were sitting on the porch looking over the land.

1-24-1862 Cavalry Camp, Wells Station, KY he feels tollerably well but not completely. Silus is sick, he is out in the . .country at a house. Daniel is well. He was saddened by Joel's death. He asks Jemima, his sister, to help Jane with the naming of the "boy" but do call him FLETCHER. May God of Heaven Bless you and sustain you all through life, that when our days are over in this world that we may have an inheritance at Gods Right Hand in . Heaven. My Prayers with you! Your Loving Husband, till death, Fletcher!

Thus ends the letters from Fletcher Gibson, CSA Soldier, died March 15, 1862 in an Atlanta, GA Hospital, giving his all for a cause he believed in so dearly.

He tells Nancy Jane that they must endure this hardship of being separtated, for their right to sit on their own porch and worship God as they choose not to have some outside force tell them what to do and when to do it.

For this I respect him and his sacrifice! He makes me so proud to be one of his descendents. He has no grave site, but will have a headstone placed by the side of his belowed little wife, Nancy Jane Perry Gibson on 17 October 1998 in the Barkada, Drew County, AR. Andrews Chapel Cemetery with CSA reenactors and descendents participating in this very special memorial dedication.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ notes ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

*Elizabeth Lauhon, the sister to Dr. Silas Reuben Lauhon, wife of Jesse Perry was the mother of Nancy Jane Perry who married Fletcher Gibson brother of Maaci Gibson wife of Dr. S.R.Lauhon

** I find this very interesting: on WFT CD tree 5713 by Broderbund, it lists Susannah Gibson w/correct dates for b & d. but married to Henry Jackson Trotter born April 11, 1817 in Person County, NC mar. Oct 18, 1883 in Monticello, AR d. Oct 8,1893 in Monticello, bur. Campground Cem. It lists no children for them. ^^ The Oct 18, 1883 is before the date W.D.Ford died in Oct 11, 1886 ^^In the Rock Springs Cemetery, the headstone for Susannah lists her as the wife of W.D.Ford. ^ ^ The October 18, 1883 dates are verified by all extant data which Dr. Wm Yates Trotter Jr. has found in Drew county records.

Details:
Susannah Gibson mar. Wm.D. Ford (12-30-1855) (20 years her senior)
..............
W.D. the s/o Mumford & Rachel Ford s/o James Yancy Ford
. . their daughter Willie Ada Ford mar. Virgil J. Trotter b. 1 Dec 1897 Monticello, AR
............ . . Virgil Juan Trotter was the son of Henry J. & Malissa Connor Trotter (homesteaded land in 1850 in Coleman.)
So...Susannah married Henry J.(born 1817**15 years her senior) 18 October 1883;
which was before the date W.D.Ford died!

Thus making the Mother of Willie Ada Ford (Susannah Gibson ) the wife of Willie Ada Ford's Father-in-Law (Henry Trotter!!)

Dr. Wm Yates Trotter Jr. who posted this information states he has the documentation from Drew county records to varify these statements. Virgil Juan Trotter was his grandfather & Willie Ada Ford Trotter his grandmother. He further states W.D.Ford went bankrupt (along with many others) shortly after the Civil War, and that W.D. removed Susannah as executor in the codicil of his will, but there was no indication that he disinherited her or that there was any sort of friction. However, all of these people were Puritanical and there is no indication of a divorce in the Drew county records and never a word of this in all the verbal knowledge in the Drew county families.

Any thoughts???

Dedication of A Confederate States of America
Memorial Headstone for
PVT
Fletcher Gibson
on 17 October 1998

At 2 O'Clock the service started with the Reenactment Color Guards from the 1st AR Co D and 9th MS proceeding the Family members participating who were dressed in the traditional 19th Century dress. Glenn & Susan Railsback representing the David Owen Dodd Chapter 212 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy of Pine Bluff, AR participated in the service.

The wind was blowing just enough to keep the flags waving as they seemed also to want to put their approval on this service so long in materalizing. With the military record of Fletcher Gibson stating NO GRAVE SITE...NO PERSONAL EFFECTS..it has taken such a long time to finalize this memorial marker.

Opening the ceremony with a prayer was Fletcher Gibson's GGGrandson Hubert McKeown, then the UDC dedication and challange to never forget our ancestors and our Southern Heritage, " nothing is lost that is not forgotten." GGGrandson John Wayne Gibson told of the Military History of the Unit Fletcher Gibson served with, followed by the "Bonnie Blue Flag" sung by GGGGranddaughter Lilly Gibson Herring.

A most moving rendition of the letters Fletcher sent home to his little wife, 16 year old Nancy Jane Perry Gibson, was given by GGranddaughter Lillian Nichols McKeown. How she moved the very roots of everyone there with the love she expressed for her GGrandfather Fletcher. The emphasis she placed on his Christian beliefs and ideals, expressed through his letters to wife "Miss Jane" and the trembling sweetness of her 85 year old voice was more than most of us could endure without releasing tears.

Afterwards, GGGGranddaughter Lilly Gibson Herring sang "The Rebel Soldier", almost equally as moving in its wording "I am a Rebel Soldier and far from my home."

The Family Lineage was given by GGGranddaughter Bettye Hogue Bond. Linking the Gibsons from 1800 SC Zachariah & Maachah Gibson down to those 1997-8 GGGGGrandchildren attending the dedication. The entire group sang "The Old Rugged Cross".

GGGrandson Hubert McKeon dismissed the group with a moving prayer and the Color Guard had the traditional gun salute. Pictures were taken starting with the GGrandchildren (those present), adding GGGrandchildren, then GGGGrandchildren and even GGGGGrandchildren till the entire attending family of Fletcher and Nancy Jane Perry Gibson was standing behind their headstones.

I feel very sure that Fletcher and Nancy Jane Perry Gibson are both rejoicing , if only a memorial headstone, they are finally together, just as they first started their lives, those many one hundred and thirty eight years ago in 1860 at the Methodist Episcopal Church South. He was 21 and she was 16 now 160 and 155...

May God Rest their Souls.....

THANK YOU FOR VISITING MY TRIBUTE PAGE TO MY GIBSON ANCESTORS, ESPECIALLY MY

GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER FLETCHER GIBSON WHO GAVE HIS ALL FOR THE

SOUTHERN CAUSE HE BELIEVED IN.

HE IS TRULY A SOUTHERN HERO TO ME!

Bettye Hogue Bond
