Reversals By Ramsey Parents- Barbara Walters Interview 3-17-00
Reversals By JonBenet Ramsey Parents, They Spill The Beans In ABC Interview With Barbara Walters
John and Patsy Ramsey
On March 17, 2000 Barbara Walters interviewed John and Patsy Ramsey, the parents of JonBenet Ramsey, on ABC's 20/20 television show.  They used their appearance to publicize their recently released book, The Death Of Innocence.  Barbara Walters used the opportunity to ask them questions that many viewers had on their mind, specifically whether the parents had been involved in the death of their daughter.  Although the parents portrayed themselves in their forward speech as innocent, suffering, loving parents who still want to find out who killed their daughter, their reversals reveal something far different and sinister.  Reversal highlights include:  reversals naming two other persons, David and Michelle, who were involved in the events surrounding JonBenet's death; Patsy Ramsey witnessing someone having intercourse with her daughter; a group effort to compose the ransom note; John Ramsey's fear about what an exhumation might show; and references to staging a crime scene.
The forward speech is quoted below.  Brackets show where the reversals occur.  The reverse speech is shown in bold.  Click on each .ra extension to hear the forward and reverse speech.  (You need Real Player to hear these sound files.  If you don't have it on your computer, there is a link to a free download on my site at http://home.pacbell.net/etaoinsh)  The forward speech is heard first and then followed by each reversal being played three times at progressively slower speeds.  Finally, the bracketed segment of forward speech is played and immediately followed by the reversal, all at normal speed.  If you minimize Real Player at the bottom of your screen, you can follow the text to verify each reversal as you hear it.
Comments and opinions are those of this author and may or may not accurately represent the true thoughts of the speakers.  Click on the excerpts described below to go to the full text and sound files.
    Excerpts include:
Patsy Ramsey speaks of loving her daughter while her reversals indicate she observed intercourse occurring.
John Ramsey speaks of putting his children to bed while his reversals identify someone else named David who was present and spent nearly an hour verbally cursing him.
Patsy Ramsey describes finding the ranson note while her reversals indicate composition of the note was a group effort.
John Ramsey describes hearing Patsy call him after she found the ransom note while his reversal indicate the Ramseys believe they are fooling listeners.
John Ramsey describes then rushing to Patsy while his reversal indicates a man raped his children.
John Ramsey states he regrets not getting more help than the friends and police he summoned to his house while his reversal indicates he regrets using a faulty homemade device that adjusted air supply.
John Ramsey discusses the out of place suitcase found under a basement window while his reversal indicates this is helping them.
John Ramsey describes finding JonBenet's body while his metaphorical reversal indicates he was drawing attention to a deception.
John Ramsey discusses the police asking them to leave the house while his reversals describe steps he took in secret before leaving for Atlanta.
John Ramsey takes affront to claims that their emotional response was inappropriate and indicated guilt while his reversals indicate that the parents will not reveal the truth and have molested no more.
Patsy Ramsey justifies entering JonBenet in a number of beauty pageants.  Her reversals indicate that JonBenet loved it but admit that JonBenet did not like the lipstick put on her.
Patsy Ramsey claims that anyone who sees the way JonBenet was dolled up as perverted has something wrong with themselves.  Her reversals, however, indicate that John Ramsey was preoccupied with having intercourse with a monster and did not see JonBenet being tickled.
John Ramsey says it makes no sense to accuse him of being responsible for his daughter's death since he has no history of such abusive behavior.  However, his reversals show he is obsessed with sex.
John Ramsey denies that he staged a crime scene.  His reversals, however, indicate that this was the idea of his associate, Michelle, who was present but left the house before the police were called.
Barbara Walters accuses Patsy of killing JonBenet for bed wetting while John comes to his wife's defense.  His defense is logical while his reversal accuses Barbara Walters of being a snit who went beyond the limits.
Patsy Ramsey speaks in whispered tones of loving her children.  Her reversal indicates the whispering may be a conscious affectation.
Patsy Ramsey speaks of being questioned by a Denver homicide detective about whether her husband killed JonBenet.  Her reversal is enigmatic but may refer to the read out on a device related to the regulation of breathing.
Patsy Ramsey supports her husband's claim that an intruder could have broken into their home and written the ransom note while awaiting for their return.  Her reversal indicates her husband is a liar.
John Ramsey deflects Barbara Walters question as to why the body was not exhumed to test one homicide detective's theory that a stun gun was used on JonBenet by saying that he doesn't know why the police did not consider that.  His reversals indicate he said no to the exhumation since he feared it and did not want to risk it.
John Ramsey says he does not know whether the murderer is someone he knows.  His reversal indicates he knows who wounded (apparently the head injury) his daughter.
John Ramsey complains of people calling them under false pretenses.  His reversal for the false pretenses uses the same metaphor he used to describe his discovery of JonBenet's body.
Patsy Ramsey speaks of the loss of her daughter while her reversals indicate the Ramsey parents are winning.
Patsy Ramsey indicates she can't go any lower since she has been hurt as badly as she can be.  Her reversals indicate anger toward the treatment Barbara Walters is giving her.
Speaking about how this experience has affected their marriage, the Ramseys talk about their love and support for each other.  In reverse they refer to the cash settlement they just won from the Star tabloid.
Asked about whether they considered suicide, the Ramseys answer in the affirmative.  In reverse, Barbara Walters refers to a specific rumor.  John Ramsey confirms the rumor and a failed suicide attempt.  Patsy Ramsey's reversals make her sound lonely with time on her hands.
Patsy Ramsey recites that she and her husband will spend the rest of their lives looking for the murderer.  Her reversal indicates this is the ideal way of divorcing themselves from the case.
Patsy Ramsey talks of her faith in God.  Her reversal calls attention to her leafing through their book as a front.
Patsy Ramsey says that the best place for JonBenet was her arms but that she is now in a place (presumably heaven) where Patsy will be one day.  Her reversals indicate that JonBenet was nauseous when Patsy held her at the end.  Her reversals also indicate that Patsy fears she has fallen from grace and will go to hell.

Patsy Ramsey:  "[How can I tell you how much I love my daughter?]"

Her lie down.  Swelled out stomach, bring your legs down and they fu*k.    legsdown.ra

Comment:  Patsy is mentally visualizing events she witnessed which led to the death of her daughter.

John Ramsey:  "[We came home, went to bed], uh, JonBenet was asleep when we [arrived home.  We took her to bed] and, uh, [got Burke to bed] and, went to, went to sleep."

David know, boy met you  //  David accursed you most of the hour  //  David heard that
                                       accursed.ra

Comment:  No one to my knowledge has mentioned the presence of anyone named David at the home that evening.  The boy referred to may have been Burke.  It sounds like David chewed out John Ramsey for almost an hour.  Were they arguing about who was responsible for JonBenet's death?

Patsy Ramsey:  "And as I came to the bottom of the stairs, there were three pages neatly laid across one of the [runs of the stairway.  I turned around to start] to see what it was."

Hurts, admiring her.  Yeah, yeah we're etching this note.    etching.ra

Comment:  Composition of the ransom note was a group effort.  The "her" referred to is, I believe, an already dead JonBenet.  More about this aspect of the case will be posted shortly from reversals found on the Ramsey interview broadcast on the Today Show on NBC on March 20 and 21, 2000.

John Ramsey:  "[I knew from] Patsy's tone of voice that something was very wrong."

    We're fooling ya.      fooling.ra

Comment:  John Ramsey thinks he is fooling the audience by describing a non-existent event, Patsy calling him after discovering the ransom note and the fact that JonBenet was missing.

John Ramsey:  "And [I rushed downstairs and] she told me there was a note [and I read it]."

Man, sir rapes my children  // it's been a rotten night        rapes.ra

Comment:  The plural "children" raises the question of whether Burke was molested that night.

John Ramsey:  "[If I have a regret, it's that I didn't get more help]."

Why home baked?  Adjusted air group, way off.      wayoff.ra

Comments:  Barbara had asked John Ramsey if he would have invited all the friends and neighbors over the morning after discovering the ransom note, if he could do it all over again.  John's reversal talks about another regret he has, relating to the JonBenet's death due to suffocation.  Some method or device was used which controlled her breathing.  It was home made or jerry rigged and the adjustment for air was not accurate.  There are reversals from the November NBC Dateline interview which speak of blocking the air and messed up air sealers.

John Ramsey:  "That looked wrong.  That suitcase did not belong there."

Patsy Ramsey:  "It was out of place."

John Ramsey:  "[It's out of place]."

    It's helping us.      helping.ra

Comment:  The Ramseys are referring to the suitcase which was found in their basement below a window.  The Ramseys ask if the killer may have stood on the suitcase to exit through the basement window.  Such speculation is helpful in that it leads investigators away from them.

John Ramsey:  "I knew [instantly, instantly] what I'd found."

Hail the snake.  Hail the snake.           hailsnake.ra

Comment:  Snake is a reverse speech metaphor for deception or false pretenses.  Its roots may go all the way back to the Bible story about Eve being deceived in the Garden of Eden.  John Ramsey was speaking here about his alleged discovery of JonBenet's body in the morning when police and guests were present.  John wanted to draw attention (hail) to the deception that had been engineered.

John Ramsey:  "[I did.  We had, uh, been asked to leave the house.  Within minutes of that happening the police took the house over.  We had nowhere to go]."

Well, I'd get her one day, we're both- So I had concealed with me in the back bedroom send it method.  So I had Villa sign it.  Much value stayed there.      muchvalue.ra

Comment:  Barbara Walters had just asked John Ramsey if it was true that he had called his pilot to arrange a flight to Atlanta shortly after discovering his daughter's body.  The "her" may refer to having JonBenet's body shipped to Atlanta later.  The rest of the reversal may refer to plans to be able to access his assets in Colorado.  If the Ramseys were out of state or under arrest, they might have a problem accessing their assets.  Villa may have been a trusted friend who was given some form of a power of attorney to access such assets and send them to the Ramseys.

John Ramsey:  "I've heard that and I find that [unbelievable].  [I've lost two children].  And [for someone to tell me] [that I didn't act right], uh, [I don't accept]."

We'll reveal not  //  her little shoes sold out  //  we molested no more surf  //  scare fat and did doubt it  //  surprising no doubt              molested.ra

Comment:  John Ramsey was responding to Barbara Walters' statement that the police thought the Ramsey parents were guilty because they did not appear distraught but were stoic, unemotional, and rarely talked to each other.  John agrees their lack of expected emotional response may surprise people.  The parents won't reveal what happened but have apparently stopped any further molestation.  "Surf" is a reverse speech metaphor referring to life's activities.  "Fat" is another metaphor which generally refers to stored resources or energy but its meaning here is unclear.

Patsy Ramsey:  "It's not unlike a father who enjoyed playing baseball as a child.  He wants to impart that same love of the game with his, [his son, or daughter.  It's, there's just absolutely nothing wrong with it.]

Nothing wrong.  You find me a little spat, just her lipstick.  Her daughter loves it!
                               lipstick.ra

Comment:  The reversal by Patsy about JonBenet apparently objecting to wearing lipstick is consistent with a previous reversal by John Ramsey (visit my site with Ramsey reversals from the November 19, 1999 NBC Dateline interview) referring to a "battle on make-up."  Here Patsy was responding to criticism from Barbara Walters about pushing her daughter into beauty pageants.  Patsy herself had been a former Miss West Virginia.

Barbara Walters:  "[They call] JonBenet [a six year old Lolita, a pint sized sex kitten]."

Raw kid  //  Big kiss, ass snap.  Her heel will already kiss it.

Patsy Ramsey:  "The people that, [that look at these things and see something] perverted, [that didn't come from JonBenet].  That's coming from the viewer, not the child."       monster.ra

It must cease, does not see tickle, Dad  //  and the monster fu*king with Dad

Comment:  Barbara Walters was commenting after showing video footage of JonBenet in some pageant where she was vamping by throwing the audience a big kiss and then turning on her heel and exiting while swaying her hips from side to side.  I think John Ramsey was preoccupied with another woman, probably Michelle, and did not see what was happening with JonBenet.  Michelle is mentioned in a reversal two more sections down from this section.

John Ramsey:  "[Fits right] in the category of it could have been done by [an alien, as well].  It makes no sense.  There is no history.  [A person doesn't go throughout their] lives as a [normal, human being], one night turn into a monster, slaughter their daughter, go to bed [and get up and act normal] from there on."

You're stiff  //  Well, I was an alien  //  With fires, works the soot in the surf up  //  Give to me hormone  //  Hormone panic- pregnant               hormone.ra

Comment:  Barbara Walters had just accused John Ramsey of molesting JonBenet.  John's reversals show an obsession on his part with sexual matters.  Reverse speech has a tendency to correct lies or misstatements in forward speech.  Is John Ramsey's reversal that he was an alien a tacit admission that he had molested his daughter?

John Ramsey:  "[If I'd staged it], [I would have wanted the p]olice to see it as I staged it.  [It's not logical.  Makes no sense.]"

Then she exit off it  //  Put then all voodoo out  //  My associate Michelle wants it
                                                michelle.ra
Comment:  The discussion was about whether the crime scene had been staged.  Michelle is an associate of John Ramsey and this is probably a business association.  Michelle was present and it was her idea to stage the crime scene.  I suspect Michelle is also the "monster" that Patsy indicates was having intercourse with John Ramsey.  Voodoo may refer to objects and elements used to stage the crime scene.  After the crime scene had been staged, Michelle exited the Ramsey house.

Barbara Walters:  "[You could have done it.  You could have gotten] nervous and afterwards you could have done it.                 Out with the queen and out with the queen  //

Patsy Ramsey:  "No, no."                              queen.ra

Barbara Walters:  "You could have awakened your husband and said 'I did this terrible thing-

John Ramsey:  "But, but Barbara-

Patsy Ramsey: "No."

Barbara Walters:  -John, and now we have to stage this.'  [You know people have said this]."
Said this fella be quiet  //
Patsy Ramsey:  "Of course they've said it."

John Ramsey:  "But would you, you have a child, would you [get up in the middle of the night and slaughter your child]?"                          Actually you're all snit.  Out of the limit buddy.

Comment:  The "queen" is a metaphor for JonBenet, the child beauty pageant queen.  Barbara Walters was putting forth the theory that Patsy struck out in rage against Jon Benet for bed wetting.  When John Ramsey attempted to come to his wife's defense, Barbara's reversal told him to be quiet.  When John spoke again, his comment was logical (if you assume his version that they had all been asleep) but his reversal lets Barbara have it for being out of line in her questioning.  A "snit" is defined as a mad or agitated snake.

Patsy Ramsey:  "Bed wetting is totally insignificant.  [I love my children]."

Her voice now fell out.             voice.ra

Comment:  Patsy's first sentence was said in a normal tone of voice while the second sentence was whispered.  The reversal is another way of saying that she is now whispering.  Patsy Ramsey is very aware of the impression she wants to make and affects certain mannerisms of voice and movement to that end.

Patsy Ramsey:  "Tom Haney, who is the detective- [homicide detective from Denver - asked me that very question] in my three day interrogation.  After three days of listening to him hammer me, I said 'Don't even go there'."

Was so carried by the exciter, made me forget the decimal          decimal.ra

Comment:  Patsy was replying to Barbara's question as to whether she ever suspected her husband John of being the one who murdered JonBenet.  I think Patsy's reversal comes from her remembering something about JonBenet's death.  Earlier November reversals from the NBC Dateline television show spoke about "bringing air, blocking the air, and messing up the air sealers."  In the sixth reversal section down from the top of this page, John Ramsey talks about a home baked air group with the adjustment way off.  Is it possible that Patsy was in charge of monitoring JonBenet's air supply but got so caught up in the sexual activity going on that she neglected her duties?

Patsy Ramsey:  "We would have been gone for [three to four hours.  That is plenty], ample time to find their way, and learn their way around the house."

He knows that.  Sir liar over here.        liar.ra

Comment:  Under the Ramsey theory of a bungled kidnapping, it would not make sense for the killer(s) to compose a ransom note after killing JonBenet with her body left behind.  John Ramsey had just been telling Barbara that the kidnappers could have broken into their home hours before the Ramseys returned and spent the time composing the ransom note.  Although Patsy's forward speech supports John's claim, the reversal in it corrects the misstatement by indicating that John is a liar.

Barbara Walters:  "Why wasn't the body exhumed?"

John Ramsey:  "Don't know why the police didn't [consider that].  Uh, we were asked, [when this theory first] surfaced, about a stun gun, that, if the body were exhumed, it could be proved conclusively but it had to be done fairly quickly."

I didn't risk it.  //  Sir, fear it, say no.          fear.ra

Comment:  One detective had a theory that two marks on JonBenet's body corresponded to a "Taser" style stun gun that had been used in another case which he was familiar with.  John Ramsey's answer deflects the question by failing to disclose that he had opposed an exhumation.  Did someone use a stun gun on JonBenet?  What did John Ramsey fear that could have been discovered after an exhumation?

Barbara Walters:  "Do you think the murderer is someone you know?"

John Ramsey:  "[I don't know that I knew this person or not.]  I hope I don't."
I'm the one that surfs it.  Wound out of the one no doubt.
                                                                 wound.ra
Patsy Ramsey:  "[I can't believe that we have ever knowingly met anyone that can be this vicious.]  [But someone killed our daughter.]  [So we have to start looking.]  We start at the inner circle and keep moving out."
So ships are leaving.  I no mean it.  I'm the only one whosever value was to be able to make out.// Her daughter licking no musket  //  Nickel rubs its value with.

Comment:  John's reversal indicates that he was involved in the incident (surfs it) and that he has no doubt about who caused the wound to JonBenet.  It was one person.  This may be David.  Remember that the wound (JonBenet's head was bashed in) was not the cause of death.  Suffocation caused the death.  I suspect the head wound may have been inflicted after death to mislead investigators.  "Nickel rubs its value with" may refer to the fact that the co-conspirator guests at this private sex party were not wealthy like the Ramseys.  "Her daughter licking no musket" complements the forward speech of "But someone killed our daughter."  Licking a musket is metaphorical for committing suicide.  Since JonBenet did not commit suicide, someone killed her.  The "I no mean it" reversal comes from the forward speech segment about knowingly meeting anyone this vicious.  Patsy does not mean her forward speech segment if she was present and witnessed JonBenet's death.  There is a reversal section four sections below this one where Patsy uses the expression "make out" to describe the cash she received from the settlement of the lawsuit against the Star tabloid which falsely accused JonBenet's younger brother Burke of being the killer.

John Ramsey:  "People would call on us [under false pretense] and say they were someone they weren't."

Snake here, it's all for naught.       naught.ra

Comment:  Here is another example of the snake metaphor.  The reversal is complementary to the forward speech.

Patsy Ramsey:  "Barbara, I have lost [the most precious thing in the world] to me.  I've lost my child, my little girl, Jon Benet.  I have been as low as you [humanly can go]."

We are winning.  It's a sharp summit.  //  Why are you killing me?    winning.ra

Comment:  Barbara Walters had finished accusing the parents of being responsible for JonBenet's death and was now winding up the interview on a more sympathetic note.  Her last question to Patsy related to how Patsy got through all of this, i.e. the tragedy, the adverse publicity, etc.  The first reversal indicates a belief that the parents are winning the battle although it has been difficult (sharp summit).  The second reversal refers to Patsy's anger toward Barbara for playing devil's advocate with her.  A continuation of that dialog is found in the section below.

Patsy Ramsey:  "[You can kick me when I'm down but you can't take me any lower] 'cause I'm hurt [as badly as I can be hurt]."

Well, you made, that makes me mad and I know you kick me feet  //  Stir hate in the Cafe El Babs
                                babs.ra

Comment:  Cafe El Babs refers to Barbara Walters' show, 20/20.

Barbara Walters:  "What has this done to your marriage?"

John Ramsey:  "[I think it's strengthened our love, uh, for each other]."

Her last year, uh, follow her- in the courts they give out.

Patsy Ramsey:  "[I can't imagine what I would do without John to lean on]."
                                                                                         healed.ra
I'm healed not.  Ride the way to battle.  This time I make out.

Comment:  The Ramseys had just settled their lawsuit against the Star tabloid for an undisclosed sum.  The lawsuit was filed after the Star ran an article falsely claiming that her brother Burke had killed JonBenet.  The original suit sought $25 million.  In their November interview on NBC's Dateline, in an apparent reference to that lawsuit, which had just been filed, John Ramsey had a string of reversals referring to a cash boost they expected to receive from a man they had by the jugular.

Barbara Walters:  "[Did either of you ever consider suicide]?"

And also with citizen's Corvette, we've heard of it.

John Ramsey:  "[I have to admit that yes I did]."

They did say it and it fail.
                                                       fail.ra
Barbara Walters: "You did too?"

Patsy Ramsey:  "Yeah.  [But we have other children.  They need us now more than ever.  So we have to be strong for them.  That's the only reason that we have to go on.]"

Now I could value it, so you rely.  It's set.  My anger for not see the values.  Her flatten in their own minds.  I need knitting.  There's little to share our value with.

Comment:  Barbara Walters' question refers to an apparent rumor involving a suicide attempt with a vehicle.  The two most common ways to commit suicide with a vehicle are to either:  1) run a hose carrying carbon monoxide exhaust into the passenger compartment or 2) to drive the vehicle in a manner that it crashes.  It would be interesting to see if there was news coverage of such an occurrence with John or Patsy Ramsey.  A crash may have been reported as a traffic accident (probably single vehicle) and not as a suicide attempt.  John Ramsey's unconscious understood Barbara's reversal and his reversal responds to hers.  He admits there was such a rumor and that his suicide attempt failed.  Patsy's reversals sound like she may be depressed.  I think the reversal "I need knitting" indicates that she needs something to keep her occupied.

Patsy Ramsey:  "[We are going to be their worst nightmare.]  Patsy and John Ramsey are hanging in there.  [Until the day we die], we'll be looking for the person that murdered our daughter."

Here I am, young sir.  We're a'peeping over you.  //  The ideal way of divorcing it.  ideal.ra

Comment:  Patsy was referring to the Boulder, Colorado police department in her first reversal.  In her second reversal she indicates the Ramseys have adopted the O.J. Simpson technique for divorcing themselves from a case where they are the prime suspects.  They will spend the rest of their lives looking for the killer.  O.J. spends a lot of time looking for the killer on golf courses.  It is not clear yet where the Ramseys will do their looking.

Barbara Walters:  "Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey, again and again in your book, you talk about your faith in God."

Patsey Ramsey:  "[If it weren't for our faith, there would be no hope of ever s]eeing JonBenet again."

Survey the book how I leaf through it.  Yeah, for our front with it.       front.ra

Comment:  This is another example of how Patsy is consciously posturing and manipulating to create a false public image.  They used their appearance to publicize their new book about JonBenet's death which is entitled The Death Of Innocence.

Patsy Ramsey:  ..."my arms were the best place [for JonBenet to be.]  [But she's in a place] where I hope to be one day.  [I know I'll be there.]"

Yeah, but end up nauseous  //  Say hell's gonna be shit  //  Or I be fallen  fallen.ra

Comment:  Before JonBenet died, she apparently was nauseous.  (Is there any connection between the nausea and the first reversal section above where Patsy indicates the stomach swelled out?)  Patsy fears she has fallen from grace and will end up in hell for her participation in the events leading up to JonBenet's death.
