DRIVER INFORMATION
Brenda Rice

In the world of auto racing nationwide there are over 75-million race fans and over 35-million of them are women. The popularity of auto racing appeals to men, women and children, a true fit for the entire family. Obviously, women have an uphill battle breaking into auto racing as a driver. Being stereotyped and being ignored by major sponsors whose products they use every day are just two of the hurdles women face trying to enter racing. But, possibly the greatest challenge they have is inside themselves, more specifically, their nature.

Women can be highly successful in racing. We tend to think all women should be stereotyped as "the weaker sex" but then there is Brenda Rice, a prime example of a woman not at all fitting in the box we tend to place them in. By day Brenda is a supervising registered nurse; by some nights and weekends, she is the driver of the Mod-Lite Thunder Chassis #77.

Rice has been racing in the Mod-Lite division since she started her racing career seven years ago. She has two Top-10 finishes to her credit and has finished 17th in the ESDCA (Empire State Dwarf Car Association) final points standings for the 2006 racing season.

When I asked her how she became interested in the dwarf car division she responded; “I love racing and wanted to take a larger part in it other then just being a fan.” She went on to say, “they are fast, fun and affordable!” Brenda’s first race was at the Brewerton Speedway in April 1999, unfortunately she did not qualify. She told her husband, “it looked easy from the grandstands!” since that time she has gone on to compete at several different tracks such as Fulton, Cayuga County Fairgrounds, Rolling Wheels, Can-Am, Thunder Alley, Afton and Oswego Speedways, with her favorites being Can-Am and Fulton.

The Thunder Chassis that Rice is currently driving was built in 2004 and is wrenched by herself and her husband David. The team is sponsored by Carolyn’s Airport Diner located in the Oswego County Airport Complex on Rt. 176 just outside the city of Fulton. Also listed on the car as sponsors are Lightning Motorsports of Red Creek, NY and Austin Excavation Contractors, Fulton N.Y.

David, her husband has played the most important part in her driving career along with the help of Kevin and Frank Doll Jr.

I then asked her if she had any comments or tid-bits of information that she would like to share with me and she said; “I may not be the fastest and I might not have the best equipment but one thing is for sure, I definitely have the most fun!” She continued to say that when I put on the helmet, I’m just one of the guys.”
