The American Eskimo is thought to be of German descent. The name "spitz" as they once were called, refers to any full coated, pointed ear, fox faced dogs who carry their tails over their back. The title, spitz, was dropped in 1923 when the UKC set the name, American Eskimo. Eskies were used by the Ringling Brothers in their circus act back in the 1940's and 50's. Eskies belong to the non-sporting group and are not used for hard work. They are used as service therapy animals and for companionship.

The American Eskimo is a beautiful white or white with biscuit cream dog. White being the preferred color. The Eskie should have black to dark brown points. Points being the eyes, eye rims, nose and lips. This is according to UKC and AKC standards. The darker the points, the better.
Bi-weekly brushing is needed to keep their coat shining and tangle free. They only need an occasional bath as their coat is virtually self-cleaning. Weekly maintainance is needed to keep your Eskie looking great and feeling well too. Eskies"blow their coats," once to twice a year, depending on the sex of the dog. Once a year for males, and twice a year for unspayed females. They do shed some in between as well, but not as bad. Adding vitamins to the dogs daily diet (for their skin and coat) will help reduce daily shedding.

These are pictures of our Eskies, Bumble (standard), and Yappy (mini-at top of page). Also, Pooh, and other pups. Eskies have a fun loving personality and love to please their human family. They love their toys, games and food. Especially food! My dogs have "PR" UKC and AKC registrations. (Most are dual registered.) They have great pedigrees and champion bloodlines. There is no other breed like them. They will steal your heart, but will give you theirs in return. We are blessed to have such wonderful friends, our eskies.
