Re: Outcome of meeting with Dr. Harutunian concerning University of Chicago School Mathematics Project

Dear Harry:

Thank you very much for meeting with me and members of the Steering Committee of Concerned Parents of Reading. I applaud your efforts and attention to this matter. The following is my recollection of our meeting, please communicate to me if you feel otherwise.
  1. You agree that testing of the UCSMP is needed. You agreed to provide testing in early next academic year with testing scheduled within 6-8 weeks of school beginning. The nature of the test should be the California Achievement Test or a very similar one. The results should be compared not only to national norms but previous Reading results prior to Chicago Math

  2. You agreed to investigate and report how the UCSMP program was selected. There seems to be evidence that the UCSMP program was selected over the vote of the members of task force. Please supply a list of all members of this Task Force and locate the minutes of the meetings.

  3. Please provide a timetable for the Math Study Group to reexamine and report on their findings.

  4. You seemed to indicate that you felt UCSMP suffers from an implementation problem. Members of Concerned Parents feel the program lacks balance and should either be substituted or supplemented with additional materials. Please report on your communications with other towns and what testing they have done to evaluate the UCSMP. Please again provide a timetable for completion. Please speak to Principal James Coady, of the Morse School in Cambridge, due to his school's extensive experience with UCSMP.

  5. CPR still feels a Task Force composed as suggested be assembled before the Fall. You did not feel this was necessary. Please tell CPR why. This Task Force could examine the Virginia State Board's curriculum guidelines for Mathematics Education. Please supply CPR with Reading's Current Grade by Grade Objectives.

CPR Looks forward to working with you.

Sincerely Concerned Parents of Reading Steering Committee
