We have had a good visit here in southern Arizona, and are looking forward to heading east for Florida.
As a result of an article about us and our tour in the Parker, Arizona newspaper, we have several new people in our email group. Welcome aboard and we hope you enjoy our updates.
The Route:
The Adventure Cycling Southern Tier Route heads into the mountains of southern New Mexico east of Phoenix. The general altitude is around 5500 feet and it climbs to over 8000 feet at Emory Pass. Recently, the weather here has been much wetter and cooler than normal, and the roads at the higher altitudes have stretches of compact snow and ice. As a result we decided to find a lower altitude alternate route.
We rented a car and drove through southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, finding a route that will work for bicycle touring. Accommodations and services are very limited in some areas, and we needed to know that we would not get into a bad situation along the way.
On the way back to the Phoenix area we followed the Adventure Cycling Route and visited the Gila Cliff Dwellings. It is a special place, be sure to visit here if you get the chance.
We leave tomorrow morning for Tucson, where we will stay Saturday for "El Tour de Tucson," a popular race/ride that draws 5,000 cyclists every year. Greg Lemond is scheduled to ride and we hope to see him, as well as Todd Shusterman and the other fine folks from da Vinci, who have been so supportive of our tour.
Enjoying the Southwest,
George and Sharon Miner
