Episode 616 - That Was Then

-According to Joe at dawsonscreek.com, this episode will be closing out Sweeps on February 19. According to TV Guide Online, the two-hour finale of Birds of Prey will air on that date.

-Joey is babysitting Harley in this episode. Conner (age 16) is there studying too. He is sort of Harley's (age 15) boyfriend, but when he sees Joey, he gets a crush on her. Harley gets pissed. Harley and Conner banter back and forth. Joey gets annoyed with Conner and tells him it's never going to happen. She says things like, "You boys are all alike!" She gives him some advice, telling him to fight for Harley and that guys should never give up the fight. She also says that Harley is a smart, sassy chick, and if she had a brain, she would never speak to him again. (credit Monica M at FF)

-Conner's name has been changed to "Patrick." (credit Linda at PN)

-Dawson goes back to Capeside to give a speech for his former high school film class teacher, Mr. Gold. He meets a kid named George who reminds him of himself at that age and gives him some advice. (credit Monica M at FF)

-Pacey's father is in the hospital. Pacey has scenes with him and Doug, who both say nice things to him. His dad's condition isn't terminal or anything too serious. He's going to be fine. (credit Monica M at FF)

-The teaser opens in Pacey's apartment on the same day Pacey and Joey have been sprung from Kmart. Pacey's apartment is right across the street from Hell's Kitchen, and he looks out the window. He decides to go talk to Joey about "all th things they aren't talking about." As he opens the door to leave, there's Joey. The entire scene is about seven pages long. The following are snippets from the script:

Some banter as they try to get to the point...

JOEY: It'd be nice if maybe we could stop being polite.

PACEY: Thank god you said something, because I've been meaning to emotionally abuse you.

They quickly get to the point...

JOEY: ...I guess I wonder if you regret any part. But what I meant was... do you regret telling me what you told me?

PACEY: Depends. Do you regret hearing it?

JOEY: It's kind of hard to regret hearing something that's already been in the back of my mind. ...

Joey makes an analogy by talking about the Choose Your Own Adventure book series...

JOEY: ...I would cheat on them. If the chapter wasn't going how I wanted, I wouldn't even finish it. I would go back and start over until I got the happy ending.

PACEY: Everyone does that.

JOEY: Yeah, but that's not exactly a realistic way to live your life, is it?

Pacey grows a spine that functions in front of Joey...

PACEY: ...We're older now, Joey. I'm not going to walk away if I don't like your choice. In fact, I don't even think this is entirely up to you.

They go on to agree that they regret how things ended back in season four. They talk about how much they have changed. And after that...

JOEY: So, do you think we can leave the baggage at the terminal?

PACEY: Didn't you once go out to sea with nothing but a toothbrush?

They go on to discuss that they both need to think some more. Joey says they need a plan, and Pacey jokes that he's not good at planning life-changing decisions. Then this is said...

JOEY: All I'm saying is, call me. Or I'll call you. Just to hear how you're feeling or --

He cuts her off, touching her hair or gently brushing her cheek. Whatever feels right.

PACEY: -- Since when do you need an excuse, Jo?

She catches onto his hand and they lean in towards each other. These are two people who really just want to be kissing. And they almost do. They hover in front of each other, lips practically touching for what seems like a hell of a long time. Joey bites her lip, pulling gently away.

-Act One opens with Mr. Gold and Dawson talking about the days of Capeside yore. The followin is a line from the scene:

DAWSON: Come on, Mr. Gold. Self-reflection on high school grounds is dangerous enough. Let's not make it worst by reminding me that I used to have an ego.

-Hetson begs Joey to watch Harley while he goes on a date (which is ar 3:30 in the afternoon). Hetson is freaking out that Harley has become boy crazy. Joey says the following to him:

JOEY: You should watch it, you know. Sexual deviation might not even be on Harley's mind. You keep being this strict with her, she's gonna realize that there's something fun and naughty she's apparently missing out on.

-Pacey gets a phone call informing him that his dad is in the hospital. Pacey freaks and runs out of the office. We immediately cut to Pacey running through Capeside's hospital looking for Doug and his dad. (credit Roxy, courtesy of TWB)

-Doug is a jerk throughout the entire episode. Apparently, he is jealous of Pacey's money and tries to take it out on him. He's really out of line, but has quite a few scenes with Pacey. (credit Roxy, courtesy of TWB)

-We cut to Dawson talking to Mr. Gold's class about the movie, "Wicked Dead," that he just finished. People are awed by Todd. Dawson talks about going back to his roots, which have "heart." He talks about persistency. He also mentioned how he never went to film school. He is introduced to George, who is a mini-Dawson. George keeps calling Dawson, "Mr. Leery." -Cut to Joey and Harley. Joey is begging Harley to do her homework. Joey leaves her alone in her room, and a boy named Patrick falls out of the closet. Harley leans in to kiss him and Joey comes back. Patrick is a mini-Pacey. Harley is a mini-Joey. Patrick makes leering comments towards Joey, and even calls her Josephine. -Cut to Pacey at the hospital calling Joey. He gets her voice mail. Before he can leave a message, Doug shows up and Pacey hangs up. Pacey visits with his father. The doctor tells Pacey that his dad was just telling him how proud he is of Pacey. Doug gets pissy. The doctor says that he can only have one visitor at a time, and he chooses Pacey first. -In Act Three, Pacey and his dad are male-bonding. The following is a snippet from their scene:

-In Act Four, Joey and Patrick are trying to get Harley to come out of her room. The following is a portion of Joey and Patrick's scene:

JOEY: I don't mean to do anything to you but give you some advice. Walk away right now. Don't ever mention me again. Go home and strum on your guitar or whatever it is you do and dream up some fantastic gesture to get this girl back and never think there's a day in your life when you have to stop doing that sort of thing. That's the worst thing that a guy can do. Give up the chase. And be realistic, Patrick. If I weren't such a nice girl I would have laughed in your face and called you Junior the second I met you.

PATRICK: Why didn't you?

JOEY: You remind me of someone. Now get out of here before I remember what it was that pissed me off so much about that guy when I was your age.

-Patrick leaves, and Joey is finally allowed in Harley's room. The following are snippets from their scene:

HARLEY: I've seen how it goes with the other couples in school. They just want to be together for the sake of having someone. To grab onto someone for the slow songs. But Patrick, he makes me feel something. And even when we're fighting, I feel like he gets me. Like he cares what the outcome of the conversation is. And I don't think I'll meet anything else like that.

Harley asks Joey about her relationships, and how they are when you're older. Later, during the conversation...

HARLEY: Was it this hard for you in high school?

JOEY: Of course, but everything's twenty-twenty in hindsight. Now, all the problems Pacey and I had seem so petty. And all the obstacles Dawson and I went through seemed unnecessary.

HARLEY: Well, how can I skip the middle part? What would you tell yourself back then, if you could?

And it's a damn good question.

JOEY: I've been wondering lately why things were different. Why I could talk to Eddie without being scared. When you're sixteen, so many of the choices you make are motivated by fear. Like one wrong move is the end of the world. And before Eddie, I was rotating in this high school circle. Adolescence kept repeating itself. But then I remembered, he didn't know me then, and there was something fearless about that. And suddenly I wasn't looking back. Maybe that's all it is. Taking a deep breath and forgiving yourself for yesterday's mistakes. You'll see Patrick tomorrow and want to punch his face in. But maybe he'll say something to change your mind. And you have to hear him, Harley. When I was your age, I let all the little things get in the way and I think there was a lot I didn't let myself hear. A lot that would have make things better. Don't be afraid to move forward.

HARLEY: So if all this is because of Eddie, why didn't you follow him across the country?

JOEY: It's not just about him, Harley. Not really. It's about me and what I'm ready for.

-Cut to Doug and Pacey, kind of making up and with their dad. Cut to Pacey driving up to the Leery house in his BMW. Dawson is there, but Pacey didn't know that. The following is a portion of their scene:

PACEY: I was in town. I wanted to check in on your mom, see how the work on the house was going.

DAWSON: Wow, that's ... thank you.

-They go on to talk about growing up and their dads. The following is how the scene ends:

DAWSON: Hey, Pacey?

DAWSON: I just made some coffee. Do you maybe wanna come inside? Sit down for a while? It's been a long day.

Pacey looks at him and realizes that it's been a hell of a long time since he went into that house just to talk. And it sounds nice. He stands up, takes the rest of the wood that Dawson left behind, and starts to follow him inside.

PACEY: Yeah, I'd like that.

-Cut to Joey and decision time. She calls Pacey and gets his voice mail. She leaves him the following message:

JOEY: Hey. It's me. (beat) I thought I would have an answer when I picked up the phone, but I didn't. And then I thought I would come up with something as I was talking. No such luck. I think the problem might be trying to figure this out alone. We should probably do this together... shouldn't we? (beat) You know how they say if you could do it all over again, what would you change? Well, I would probably change a lot of things... but I'm also pretty lucky that I have the chance. I guess what I'm saying is, I'm not going to look at you and think of everything that happened, Pace. I'm just going to think of everything that could. (beat) Call me back.

She hangs up the phone, a little nervous, a little excited. But not, for the first time in a long time, scared.
