THE FAMILY OF JOHN and MARGARET GOW

GG Grandparents: John & Margaret Gow

This page is dedicated to the Gow Family. John Gow, 1776-1843 & his wife Margaret Miller/Millar, 1784-1844, are said to have been born in Scotland, moving to Northern Ireland, then little by little their large family migrated to the USA. It is thought that John Gow & his brother James had farms side by side in the small town of Carncomb, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Several of James Gow's children's birth have been recorded in this town, but not of John & Margaret's. Their children assumed born in Ireland, are as follows: John 1807-1884; Ellen or Mary Ellen 1809-1889; William 1810-1896; Margaret 1812-1869; James 1815-1901 (my line); Robert 1816-1898; Nancy 1817-1853; Andrew D 1825-1894; Jane 1826-1901. A baptismal record for Jane Gow was found in the Presbyterian Church of Connor, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland. It seems John, the son, took a ship for America in 1830, Ellen & William arriving in 1833 on the ship "Herald". Margaret & 5 of her children arriving in 1835 on the ship "Tally Ho", John, the father, Andrew & Nancy arriving in 1836 on the "Bark Lanark". They initially settled in Orange Cty., NY, near Newburg, where the parents died & were buried, although no records or graves can be found. The children all moved to Harford PA where they erected a memorial stone to their parents in Harford Cemetary, Harford PA. Most of the children & their families lie in rest in the same cemetary along with many, many descendants of the Gow Family. Much research is being done to find out where in Scotland John & Margaret came from & from what clan. The name "Gow" is associated mostly with the Clan McGowan & McPherson. Some of the Gow family added an "E" to the end of their name.

My spare time is spent researching my family.

My favorite things are being in contact with members of my family, some of whom I have never met.
