The Roxbury Horse Association was formed
during the winter of 1999 in the Town of Roxbury, CT.
Its objectives are as follows:
Collaboration among horse owners and equestrians in the Town of Roxbury for
purposes of preserving its rural character: Roxbury is a uniquely beautiful rural community.
Roxbury's rural character, including the presence of open pasture,
could be better preserved if the number and size of horse properties
could be increased to offset the decline in farming.
Horse property development requires larger lots
than housing development and creates less tax demand
for the Town. To foster more horse properties and keep
those that exist , Roxbury benefits from the support of
a unified community of Roxbury horse owners and equestrians.
Development of a close community of horse owners and equestrians in the Town of
Roxbury for mutual support in the care and use of the horses: Horse care is a long-term and significant responsibility.
Horse use requires unique knowledge and skills.
For optimal horse care and use, Roxbury horse owners and
equestrians benefit by sharing their knowledge and providing
mutual support.
Creation of a strong and representative lobby group in the Town of Roxbury for
preservation of open space that allows horse access: Creating a horse friendly community is a daily effort.
Routine decisions by town commissions and community
officials impact on the realization of this goal.
As a united group, who are also tax payers, Roxbury horse owners
and equestrians participate in sensitizing these decision-
makers regarding the impact of various choices on Roxbury as
a place where horses can be safely kept and used.
Partnership with other groups interested in land conservation and trail use,
including other types of trail user groups: Pleasure-riding trail development is one important way to
safeguarding Roxbury's rural character. Residents with horses
feel more secure in investing further in their horse property
facilities if they believe there is a future for riding here.
Roxbury's horse owners who currently have to board their horses
outside of Roxbury to have access to trails are encouraged to
develop pasture and bring their horses home. Trail access
induces other horse owners to develop horse properties here.
