My Humor Novel "The Wager: A Humourous Novel about Dog Parks, Seniors and Gambling For Love Later in Life received a great REVIEW FROM WRITER'S DIGEST 2006 International Self-Published Book Awards. From Judge 16 - "I enjoyed your delightful sense of humor and ability to describe scenes so that I felt as if I were one of the group taking part in all their activities, etc. Your characterization was excellent, and I suppose that is also part of your skill in description, each character was distinct and easily identifiable; each person had a personality of his/her own so that nothing seemed stereotypical or repetitive. This was a group of feisty, sexy, active ladies, and their male counterparts. The book left me wanting to read more, and wishing that I were part of this circle of dog walkers. The dogs were delightful, and I couldn't help thinking how fortunate this group was to have such a lovely spot where the dogs and their owners could enjoy the outdoors together. YOUR SKILL AS A FICTION WRITER IS WELL DEVELOPED, AND I ENJOYED YOUR BOOK IMMENSELY."
My other humor novel, "Healing Khadijah Hussein: a Humor Novel about Burqas, Niqab, Malaysia, Culture Clash and the Power of Friendship is now available from Amazon.com for $15.99. Fashionable, westernized, Malaysian mother of two Khadijah is found dressed in a Burqa with a veil muttering Muslim prayers after Bush's invasion of Iraq. To heal her her alumni group including psychiatrist Dr. Linda, who diagnoses Khadijah with "Identity Fracture" take her on a journey of healing through Singapore, Malaysia, Lourdes, HaWAII, AND NORTH BORNEO. Dr. Linda's husband Basil, another psychiatrist clashes with MALAYSIAN SHAMAN Nordin Kadir about the cause of Khadijah's breakdown and how to cure it.
Hello. My name is Rosemary I. Patterson, Ph.D. I'm a former School Psychologist who through education, practicums and travel decided to write Literary Histories, Adventure Novels and Movie Scripts to share my experiences and insights into lives and cultures different from our own. The protagonists in my novels go through growth periods as they overcome the trials of life and learn that life is a Social Responsibility Game with an Altruistic base.
Although my settings vary from book to book and script to script and include Australia, California, Hawaii, Tahiti, New Guinea, British Columbia and the mythical town of Meredith, there is a common trait that my protagonists demonstrate. All of them are forced to overcome limitations. These limitations vary and include relationship heartache, discrimination, trauma, negative family patterns, environmental cultural and societal restrictions.
My latest novel is a humorous one. "The Wager: A novel about Dog Parks, Seniors, and Gambling for love Later In Life," is a light, funny novel about Senior Sexuality. The scene is set in this novel as Gloria Gustafson, a glamorous, retired stage star proposes an outrageous bet to her five, wealthy senior friends. The one of them that can get a new lover by Christmas will donate the $60,000.00 prize to the charity of their choice. The new lover must come from the single, divorced or widowed men in their Dog Walking Club for Seniors. Six sets of potential love affairs are set in motion. Will it be Linda 'Canine Lover' Daniels, a semi-retired veterinarian with a ten year unrequited love problem, Esther 'Perky' Goodenough, the oldest member of the group, Honey 'Y'All' Pratt, recently from the deep South, Virginia 'Prissy' Kelly, the widow of a minister, or Gloria herself who wins the bet? THE RESULT IS A HILARIOUS ROMP THROUGH THE UNKNOWN TERRITORY OF SENIOR SEXUALITY. On sale at Amazon.com for $ 11.34.
The SECOND EDITION of my novel "Return of the Canoe Societies", about Coastal tribes in British Columbia is now available from Booksurge.com. or Amazon.com. This novel is timely with the acceleration of Treaty negotiations in B.C. As well as an exciting adventure novel with outrigger canoe paddlers battling opponents of the Treaty process it has flash backs to key events in the attempts of Coastal Tribes to obtain justice.
Due to popular demand the second edition of my historical novel "Kula Keiki Ali'i (Chief's Children's School) about Indoctrination in the name of Education in an 1840 Residential school for the children who became monarchs of Hawaii, is out and is being distributed by Booklines Hawaii in Honolulu. It is available from Amazon.com, wholesale from Booksurge LLC 866-308-6235 and bookstores in Hawaii.
Both Return of the Canoe Societies and Kula Keiki Ali'i can be used as supplemental texts
for Native Studies programs to stimulate discussion about reasons for Addiction Generational Transmission in colonized populations.
All my protagonists respond to adversity and rise above a state of emotional emptiness connected to a preoccupation with materialism and status.
Instead of collapsing into a state of hopelessness, my protagonists connect into that side of our spirit that questions the higher meaning in the circumstances that have been presented to us. As a result, they find out who they really are, gain understanding of their and other's cultures, find Spirituality and locate and connect into a higher purpose in this world.
My five Literary Histories of Hawaii take the reader from 1820 when the Boston missionaries first arrived in Hawaii to the present day.
KUHINA NUI takes the reader back to the days of King Kamehameha and his favorite wife Queen Ka'ahumanu.
KULA KEIKI ALL'I (Chief Children's School):Second Edition, tells of the austere, punishing, residential school the children who would become Monarchs of Hawaii were placed into and the affects on their reigns.
ALOHA AND MAI TAIS tells of the two Hawaii musics, the western one of "Sweet Leilani" and the authentic one of hula and chant.
AN END TO INNOCENCE tells of 1960 to 2000 in Hawaii as a part-Hawaiian young woman gets in touch with her Hawaiian culture.
KULIANO, a Literary History of Kauai, tells of life in Kauai and Oahu in the 1900's as a twelve year orphan is taken from his home in the Kalalau Valley and used as an upward mobility experiment for a Native Hawaiian Prince.
In another of my latest novel,"Journey Great Barrier Reef", with a STEVE IRWIN, CROCODILE HUNTER-TYPE MAIN CHARACTER, a World Famous Marine Biologist, Dr. Rebecca Nelson and a handsome Outback Reverend, Rory McTavish find themselves endangered on a Voyage of Reconciliation for the Aborigine people when they come upon a massive Cyanide fish kill. A high government official is determined to scuttle their ship to stop the details of the Cyanide spill from becoming public. This novel was inspired by an Internet alert two years ago that told of six hundred pounds of Cyanide lying only forty miles north of Australia's Great Barrier Reef from a barge wreck in 1984.
MY SCREENPLAY ADAPTATION FROM JOURNEY GREAT BARRIER REEF WAS SELECTED AUG. 1/03 BY TELLURIDE INDIEFEST AS ONE OF TOP 30 2003 WORLD SCREENPLAYS.
2004 Writer's Digest 11th. Annual International Self-Published Book Awards Evaluation Sheet FOR Journey Great Barrier Reef.
What impressed you most about this book?
"What most impressed me about this book was its unique setting and diverse characters working together, working against one another, and mainly, the setting contributing or disturbing characters' wants. The setting - circumnavigating the Australia coastline - and the dynamic personalities involved create strong conflict within the book. THIS IS AN AMBITIOUS AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING BOOK."
"Aloha And Mai Tais," is AVAILABLE FROM from Amazon.com, and since Sept. 19/02 BORDERS AND WALDENBOOKS BOOKSTORES ACROSS THE U.S. AND HAWAII, set in 1930's and 1940's Waikiki, four young entertainers are faced with tough choices concerning love and relationships, service to country, and cultural values with the changes to Hawaii brought by Tourism, the popularity of Hawaiian music and Pearl Harbor. There is a new review about "Aloha And Mai Tais from Jen Oliver at MyShelf.com. "Aloha and Mai Tais" is entertaining and makes the reader wish that they were in Hawaii. Author Patterson makes the reader feel that they are a part of the character's lives." Full review at http://www.myshelf.com/literary/shelf.htm
MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW AWARDED ALOHA AND MAI TAIS 5 stars, and said it 'WAS LIKE GOING TO HAWAII IN A TIME MACHINE."
In "Mission Mururoa", set in the spectacularly beautiful Marquesas Islands and Tahiti, my main protagonists Tiva Faa'a and Terri'i Gagnon challenge injustice and nuclear pollution in French Polynesia. Mission Mururoa reminds the reader of nuclear dangers in the South Pacific as did the novel "On The Beach" by Nevil Shute. It is listed in the South Pacific Literature section of Moon Travel Guide David Stanley's www.SouthPacific.org.
In"An End To Innocence" (University of Hawaii Catalog Number PR9199.3 P3448 E53) a young woman gives up pursuing worldly visions of the perfect house and husband and rises to find an identity as a professional women in the world to work for the betterment of her people. This novel is an update to social conditions in Hawaii since James Michener's "Hawaii".
In "Kuhina Nui" (Prime Minister) it is hypothesized that the great Kamehameha's favorite wife, Queen Ka'ahumanu rose to understand that her decision to westernize Hawaii may have not always resulted in progress, particularly upwardly mobile progress, for her people.
In "Synergy" which is romantic comedy with embedded Tibetan Buddhist principles for living and relationships, a folksinger and a lovely but business-driven young woman, receive relationship advice from Tibettan Buddhist Lama Tsot Rinpoche. The young woman's dying father receives advice about dying from the Lama. The young woman realises that there is more to life than achieving real estate fame and fortune.
In "Alias the Tank", the nickname for "The Access Mobility Wheelchair", set in Meredith, a young victim of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder linked to erroneous incarceration in a State Institution for the Mentally Handicapped, rises above fear to take his place in the world. It is the "Rainman" of the Physically and Mentally Handicapped Fields. WRITER'S DIGEST 2003 Self-Published Evaluation Sheet says: "What impressed me most about Alias the Tank was the overall commitment toa a good premise/plot and an especially good opening chapter. In the beginning of the book, I noted the following strenths: 1)an intriguing plot, 2)dialogue that is true to characters' voices and sounds natural and authentic, 3) an intimate first-person point of view with excellent observations, insights, and emotions, 4) nice movement and rendering of scene, 5) a well-thought plot structure with a series of flashbacks, 6) great nicknames for characters, 7) nice sense of tension, and 8) a convincing, terrifying scene about being paralyzed."
In "Return of the Canoe Societies": Second Edition, a Literary History of Coastal Tribes, Second Edition, set in British Columbia, Canada, a beautiful graduate Psychology student rises above rascist driven attacks to connect with her culture and become the strong advocate for her people she is destined to be.
My Antagonists don't always fare as well but that's because they fail to grasp the rules of the "Social Responsibility Game."
The books are available at Amazon.com, and Barnes & Noble. "Aloha And MaiTais" has been included in the Borders'Group Inc. inventory through Baker & Taylor distributors and CAN BE PURCHASED AT MANY BORDERS AND WALDENBOOKS BOOKSTORES ACROSS THE U.S. AND HAWAII. Signed copies of "Kuhina Nui," are available from the author at e-mail, rpatter262@aol.com. The Second Edition of "Kula Keiki Ali'i" can be ordered from Amazon and at bookstores in Hawaii.
Movie Scripts are available for "Journey Great Barrier Reef," "Synergy," "Aloha And MaiTais," "Alias The Tank","Kuliano" about an orphan boy taken from Kauai to be an example of upward mobility in the 1900's to the 1920's, and "The Wager."

My novel, "The Wager," should be read by all baby boomers, dog lovers people approaching sixty-five or older. It promotes the idea of living and loving life to the fullest regarless of age. My novel "Mission Mururoa" set in the Marquesas Islands can be used to stimulate discussion concerning Tahitians and the former testing on the Muruoa Atoll with the versatality of an adventure novel. My Hawaiian Literary Histories can be used to supplement High School and College courses on Hawaiian or Indigenous Peoples' history with the versatility of fiction. My novel "Money Child" is a humor novel that can also be used as a beginning introduction to Tibetan Buddhism as applied to Relationship and Death and Dying Issues. My novel "Return of the Canoe Societies" Second Edition can be used to supplement High School or College courses on B.C. Native history and land claims with an entertaining and provocative novel format. My novel "Alias The Tank" can be used to highlight injustices to handicapped populations.
Book Reviews.
FIVE STAR REVIEW FROM MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW SEPT. 09/02 FOR "ALOHA AND MAI TAIS."
"Aloha And Mai Tais: A Novel About Hawaii In The 1930's And 1940's by Rosemary I. Patterson is a "slice-of-life" saga about Atherton and Jessica Scully, two elite people of Honolulu who decide to invest in the Tropical Palace Hotel. Young love, trouble in paradise (i.e. marriage), wrenching changes inflicted on Hawaiian life and culture by the crush and demands of the tourism industry, as well as the shock of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese are all part of this picturesque and memorable story that is the next best thing to taking a vacation to Hawaii in a time machine."
"Kula Keiki Ali'i (Chief's Children's School)
-"the overall book makes for interesting reading especially for those who enjoy a good mystery within a Hawaiian historical setting."
(The Hawaiian News September 1998)
"Kuhina Nui" (Prime Minister)
AOL Customer Review, May 1, 2002. By Tracy Parent, San Francisco, CA.
"Great book for your next vacation in Hawaii.
If you're planning a vacation in Hawaii, this historic novel is the perfect read while you're there. If you can get around the mediocre literary writing and editing, you can easily be transported back in time - literally time travel -with the help of several Hawiian gods, Queen Ka'ahumanu, and a homeless lady from Waikiki Beach. The author very creatively weaves history, current socio-economic issues, and a sweet romance story together, keeping the reader engaged and wondering what happens next. It's a quick lesson on the "who's who" of Hawaiian Royalty during the reigns of Kamehameha I-IV (1800's). I especially enjoyed the use of Hawiian words in context to give a more authentic flavor and appreciation for the local culture. This book taught me a lot more in 10 days about Hawaii than I would have learned from the mostly touristic resort destinations of the islands. And it left me hungry for more!
-Writer's Digest 1999 Self Published Book Awards.
What impressed you most about this book?
"I was impressed most by this author's encyclopedic knowledge of Hawaiian culture, customs, and history. I also like the political conscience that guides the novel. This is a book written for a reason. Of the characters, I was most interested in Kapeka and the Voice she hears. And-it almost goes without saying - this novel has a very strong sense of place, communicated not only in visual detail, but in a well-crafted sense of mood and atmosphere."
