The age range for decedents whom died of a drug related death for 1998 are:

In 1998, 10,123 drug abuse deaths were reported by Medical Examiners which encompass 42 metropolitan areas that participate in the DAWN project.
The 10,123 drug abuse deaths involved 25,398 drug mentions which are defined by DAWN as referring to a substance or drug that is reported in a drug abuse death submitted to DAWN. As many as 6 drugs plus alcohol in combination, can be reported on each case. The number of drug mentions will always equal or exceed the number of episodes (deaths). The data reported in this study DOES NOT REPRESENT THE NATION AS A WHOLE, exactNOR THE TOTAL OF MEDICAL EXAMINER DRUG ABUSE CASES IN THE RESPECTIVE REPORTING AREAS. This means that the number of drug related deaths does not reflect the actual number of drug related deaths in the United States for 1998, it is only a representation of the reporting areas in which ME actually reported to DAWN over a period of at least 10 months. The numbers and stats you read here are used to help predict and prepare for the trends of the future so that drug abuse and addiction can be better handled by law enforcement, task force agents, counselors, and society as a whole.
