Hi! My name is Rebecca, and I received your name and address from a woman I met on the internet who told me you would be sympathetic to my cause. I was born on August 3, 1973 at the Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, Texas. My adoption was finalized almost a year after my birth, and the name of the attorney who handled my adoption was Albert J. Leviton. I have been searching for information on my birthparents for five years now, not only because I feel the need to know the origin of my birth, but because I do not even have any non-identifying informaion about my family history (health, genetic -- nothing!). I have sent many petitions (along with a waiver of confidentiality signed by my parents) to Mr. Leviton through registered mail requesting this information, but I received no response.
About two years ago, I came across some court transcripts surrounding "black market" adoptions ("Baby Selling"). Many of the circumstances surrounding these cases mirrored what I knew of my adoption! When I brought this to the attention of my parents, they were one step ahead of me -- they had sent away for transcripts for a recent episode of the "Oprah Winfrey Show" about the same subject. Strangely, the attorney's name that was mentioned more than once on the show was Albert J. Leviton! My search reached a dead end because, according to these transcripts, Leviton had left the country.
Last week I posted a message on the adoption search boards on the internet. The woman who responded was named Karen, and she was one of the women who appeared on that episode of "Oprah Winfrey!" She gave me your name and told me you were and advocate for adoptees' rights.
I would like my records to be opened up. If you have the power to do this, or if you could even just advise me on what my next step would be, I would be forever grateful. I have enclosed copies of my birth certificate, my judgement of adoption, and the waiver of confidentiality signed by both my parents that I had originally sent to Mr. Leviton. If you require any more information (I know I've given you a lot already, but I still have more!), or if you have any advice for me, please do not hesitate to write or call.
I know you are very busy, but I cannot begin to tell you how much this means to me. Karen spoke very highly of you as someone who could be trusted and who would be willing to help. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance!
