ROCKLAND LIONS 33S
So What Happens to your donated Glasses and Hearing Aids?
Used eyeglasses are collected by Lions Clubs throughout the United States to be used for third world countries. Lions and Lenscrafters work hand and hand to help those with vision problems in other countries and some states here accept the use of used eyeglasses. Lenscrafters will go to different countries such as Bangladesh, Haiti, South America and Africa to set up a clinic for the people to be fitted to their needs.
After the Lions Club collects the eyeglasses they are dropped off at any Lenscrafters Store. They in turn sort through and separate them according to the prescription, box them and get them ready for shipment.
The people from the third world countries sometime leave their homes days in advance to line up to be ready when the crew arrives. It has been noted that some people have walked for two days and waited in line for hours to receive a pair of glasses. There has been incidents where this was the first time that some have seen. All due to the Lions collecting used eyeglasses. The crews work 10 to 14 hours a day to screen all the people that come.
Lions also collect used hearing aids. There is a Hearing Foundation that is sponsored by the Lions Club in Taunton, Massachusetts. The used hearing aids along with any good batteries are turned into this foundation. Any Hearing aids that can be refurbished go into a bank so that when a client is sponsored by any Lions Club, the hearing aid, along with the testing is provided free to the client. The lions Club has an application that must be completed and a check from their club in the amount of $100.00 for each client. There are some parts from hearing aids that can not be used, but are sent to a company (Starkey) that pays for these parts and the money goes into the Starkey Account in the Foundation. This money helps for those that have no insurance and for the children that can not be given used hearing aids.
It is very important that the Lions Clubs continue to collect used eyeglasses and hearing aids to help those less fortunate. We, the Lions, appreciate all contribution that are received.
