RUPA'S HOME PAGE

[Image]          Hello my name is Rupa and I'm from an island in the West Indies called Trinidad. Trinidad is one of two islands in a country called Trinidad and Tobago. It is the last island in a chain of islands called the West Indies. Trinidad is about six miles away from Venezuela and about ten degrees away from the equator. Trinidad covers 4,828 square kilometers (50 miles long by 37 miles wide).

Trinidad and Tobago, a cosmopolitan mix. Here you find the allure of an Old World civilization overlaid with a New World energy. The culture and heritage of our society boasts ethnic influences from all over the world, India, Africa, Spain, China for a few.

Millions of miles from the real world and just a few hours from home. Come to Trinidad and discover the most romantic, exotic and friendly island in the Caribbean. Uncrowded, unspoiled and full of unexpected pleasures. The lively home of Carnival,  birth place of calypso, limbo and steelband will fill your visit with color, rhythm and joy.

Trinidad is sophisticated, possessing a savoir-faire that is seen in the artistic expression of the people. The home of Carnival, a unique expression that has spread far and wide. Still one is but moments away from lush forests and verdant hills where a wealth of wildlife and flora testify to the richness of the land....Come to Trinidad and live life to the fullest!

My hometown in Trinidad is St. Augustin. It is most famous for Mount St Benedict Monastery high on top of a mountain it can be reached by St Johns Road in St Augustine. Although the monastery was founded by a Belgian, the first Benedictine monks came from Bahia, Brazil, in 1912, making this the oldest Benedictine complex in the Caribbean. It started with a tapia hut but construction of the main building on Mount Tabor began in 1918. The monastery has a retreat, lots of educational facilities, a drug rehabilitation center, a farm and a guesthouse. It is most popular with birdwatchers and walkers. There are marvelous breathtaking views over the Caroni Plain to the sea. You can travel by minibus from Port of Spain to St. Augustine. It will take you about 40 minutes and $5.00 in Trinidad dollars. After you check out the Monastery head down the Mount to Tunapuna, there are several good, inexpensive Chinese restaurants in Tunapuna, the next town after St Augustine. Tunapuna is known for its indoor-outdoor market offering and a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, fish, and meats. There are many vendors so shop around for the best price!
