Jack-in-the-Pulpit
Arisaema triphyllum
I was fascinated with Jacks the first time I saw them. They were so different than other plants I had seen and have a very tropical, exotic look. They often have deep maroon stripes on the spathe (the 'pulpit') but this variety had so many lovely shades of green that I couldn't resist. I hear that many gardeners turn up their noses at the common 'Jack' and prefer the even more exotic siberian species, but I am still fond of the native plant and hope to do a study of it in autumn when the spathe is gone and the spadix (the 'jack') bears bright red berries.
