CUBAN-AMERICAN ART

Welcome to my NEW HOME for 1998/1999!!!!

Well after a couple of years, I've finally gotten around to updating my website.
Keep in mind that the format is restricted by the limitations of PageMill 1.0 but be patient.
In this new version, you'll not only see my most recent paintings,
but you can still view my older works that were previously featured.

Also check out the Angel De La Libertad Mural and the subsequent
order info for a t-shirt reproduction of the mural.

If you have any questions, comments, or commissions you'd like to consider me for,
please do not hesitate to e-mail at:
sambero@aol.com.

ENJOY!

"PLACERES"

The title translated means, "Pleasures." This is one of my favorites as it captures not only a
popular subject matter, but serves a strong example of my transition in style.
(Sold)

"EL DON"

Again, continuing the theme of cigars and mystery, the Don captures a nostalgic spirit.

"DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS"

This work is meant to express the sensual nature of its subject in the gestural style
of flowing curves. The woman's face is just out of frame, invoking intrigue as
well as allowing her to be any woman the viewer chooses.

"SOLO"

This piece was inspired by the movie "Mambo Kings" in which Antonio Banderas'
character plays out the soulful melody of a tragic lost love.

"COCO"

My take on the famous pose of Coco Chanel.

"AUTUMN" "WINTER"

A personification of the two best seasons of the year!

"EL CUBANAZO DE 1933"

This piece marks my most recent transformation in style. The term "Cubanazo" denotes someone that is "very Cuban". To be more specific, this is based on a photograph by Walker Evans taken in 1933 and it captures the very essence of what a Cuban gentleman looked like. The straw hat and white linen suit were the uniform, so to speak, of a true gentleman. Symbolically, the background represents the colors of the Cuban flag as the subject becomes the "star" in the red field.

"LA CANDELA"

The title means, "The Flame." Also the name of a popular Cuban song, it refers to the fiery passion of Cuban women. I tried to capture a moment when looking at the painting, you can hear the rhythm of the drums, the rustle of her dress, and the sounds of the ocean beating behind them.

"El NIÑO CON LA FRUTA DEL CANEY"

The boy beside the wooden fruit cart is a typical scene of Cuba. Caney is a province in Cuba, famous for its agricultural fertility. We see the crop he sells include mangos, papayas, bananas, pineapple, platanos, and more! Mango daiquiri anyone?

"EL GUAJIRO"

A "Guajiro" frankly stated, is the Cuban equivalent of a "red-neck." They were the farmers who provided not only the workforce for Cuba's agricultural industry, but were integral in cultivating the folk culture of Cuban music and life.

"LA BOTANICA DE JUANA"

A "Botanica" was and still is a place where people buy herbs and other medicinal remedies. It is typical to see the jars that line the walls filled with ingredients that serve everything from curing a stomach ache to perhaps making a love potion.

"HERENCIA II"

This painting entitled, "Inheritance 2", continues from its predecessor (which can be seen on my old website) the importance of the family unit within the Hispanic community. The subjects in this painting are my great-grandmother holding my father as a child. I am fond of this painting because I feel this demonstrates the ties amongst generations, captures the nostalgic spirit of the photograph from which it was based, and immortalizes my own family.

"PATIO CAMAGUEYANO"

This painting depicts a typical decoration found on lawns in the province of Camaguey. The round object known as a "tinajon" is actually a massive clay jug used to collect rainwater before the days of indoor plumbing. Now mostly used as a decorative item, there are still many Cuban women that will swear their hair was never softer than when they washed it with water caught from a tinajon.

"MI AMOR"

Conceived as a Valentine's gift for my wife, I think the title is self explanatory.
