THE SHIP'S BOS'N
The voice of the seas.
A U.S. Navy Chief                                                   Boatswainsmate passes through
                                     sideboys during his retirement
ceremony.  Not seen is a                                                 Boatswainsmate "Piping the                                             side", rendering Honor and                                              Respect for the CPO's years
                                     of  dedicated service.
On the first note of the                                               Boatswains' Whistle, the                                                  Sideboys, "Hand Salute".
The call is then held until the                                            "Official" exits the ranks of the
sideboys.   Then the whistle                                             ends on a short high pitched                                            note and the Hand Salute is                                             dropped.
Notice the white lanyard                                             around the BMC's neck.  That                                        is his Boatswains' Pipe.

What you would hear as this Chief Boatswainsmate passes
  through the Side Boys.

for a pleasant or hellish voyage for the
ships' crew.  He was the Bos'n, the First
Warrant Officer in Charge of the ships'
crew.  Boatswain is one of the oldest
seafaring titles, meaning Boats' Swain
or Husband, and at the time, the actual
Commander of the ship.
His pipe or call was the Bos'ns'
symbol of office.  Worn about the neck
by a chain (lanyard), orders were piped to the crew.  His cane was used to beat the men to encourage them to work.
Depending on his standing in seniority,
the Bos'ns' Whistle was made in silver,
brass and copper, or nickel plated metal.
Today you  will hear the traditional
Bos'ns'  Call,  "  PIPING the SIDE  ".
A mark of respect for an Admiral, Captain, or other Commanding Officer
as he arrives or departs ship.  This call is also piped during a funeral as the coffin passes over the side.
More than the Ships' Captain, one man and one man only was responsible
What you might hear this Ships' Bos'n saying to one of his Sailors.
