![]() ![]() It's the summer of 2002 and the living is easy for dachshunds that rule. And if you know a dachshund, you know they all rule! Dachshunds might be small in stature, but they are all mighty in their minds. And in our hearts too. Here are some new to the internet photographs of Wotan, Shakti and Gaudi...the wonder wiener dogs of Washington. Some of these photos were taken in past years, but none have been seen on the web until now. So join us for a look at three wonderful doxies as they rule the Pacific Northwest in Oregon and Washington. There are a lot of large photographs on this page, so if they don't all load correctly, please hit Refresh or Reload on your browser to view them all
This photo of me with Shakti our female longhaired dachshund was taken along the Oregon coast a few years ago. The Oregon coast is a fabulous place to visit as all 362 miles of the coastline is open to the public and to dachshunds...and even to other dogs as well! This picture was taken in the dunes area near Reedsport.
About 5 years ago I broke a number of bones in my foot while hiking on a trail on the southern Oregon coast though. Was that a miserable next 10 weeks for me and the dachshunds. I was in pain much of the time and couldn't go further than a few feet from my house. As my husband wouldn't walk the dogs they ended up spending all those months cooped up in the house all the time with me. This photo shows me outside with Shakti at my side using the walker I had to use during a rare snow we had in Jacksonville, Oregon . The day I finally managed to take several Frankenstein monster type steps without the walker, Shakti was enraputured with joy and yiped and howled excitedly and tried to leap up and nip my nose. I don't know if she was so excited knowing that now that I could start to walk again she would be able to leave the house or that she had given up on me ever being able to walk again after so much time. And I was even happier than her to be able to use my leg (and arms!) again. The lobster is tiny and so is the wiener dog! Shakti is taunted with a strange red creature from the deep. She doesn't know what it is, but like a typical doxie, she wants to kill it. ![]() Wotan the mighty poses during a hike out on Cape Lookout in the Three Capes Loop area of the Oregon coast. Dachshunds may look like lap dogs, but they are anything but that. Our dachsies hike 3 or so miles almost every day and on days spent on vacations often do 8 to 10 miles every day. You should see the muscles on Wotan's front legs and then you'd know the strength of a dachshund. Wotan and Shakti were alternately frightened and aggressive to this fake deer they found sitting atop a grave on Whidbey island during one of our long walks. In this shot Wotan is about to bite it in its plaster ankle. I think this is one of the cutest photos I've ever taken of Gaudi. He looks so precious with his little paw lifted up as he stands on this big boulder on a beach. This was taken when we were near Sooke on Vancouver island in British Columbia, Canada. Vancouver island in Canada is only 9 nautical miles from our own island, San Juan.
Now this is one unhappy looking dachshund! Gaudi looks so sad in this photograph as he stands on one of the many packing boxes we used to move from one house on the island to our new one this past Fall. Dogs like consistancy and security and moving to a new home has to be one of the lowest points in their lives. Now that they are in the new house they all seem to love it, but it was utter misery to them when we did the actual switch.
This photo shows the dachshunds the very first time they saw our new house. They immediately wanted to "go home" and nosed their way in through the front door as soon as I turned the key in the lock. Wotan especially loves his home...but for him just about any house or motel room he spends his time in is "home" as far as he is concerned. ![]() The biggest thing we moved when we changed houses was our hot tub. And since there was no deck at the new house we had to have one built and a trench for power dug.
The wiener dogs like to dine alfresco like their humans. After a long hike uphill through the woods on Vancouver island the dachsies get their treat of canned dog food served high on the edge of a cliff. Yum....nothing's better than a picnic. If you don't want to see any photos of dead rats Wotan has killed recently then skip the next paragraph and photographs ![]()
Wotan may be almost 12 years old now but he's still a great hunter. Here are a couple of photos of Wotan and some of the rats he has bagged in the past year. Lap dogs? Nah!
Please come by and see our all dachshund puppies web page new as of April 2002. This new dachsie page goes back in time to when Wotan and Shakti were young puppies (the days before I had a computer...ancient in other words!) There are quite a few cute portraits
and action photos of them as dachshund puppies. Also it tells of how we got the names Wotan and Shakti and what they mean and also talks about the defect Wotan was born with (which hasn't held him back in his life).
