I was born and raised in Lavinia, a community in Carroll County, Tennessee. I graduated from Trezevant, Tennessee High School with the Class of 1963.

I was a crewmember on the famous Lockheed C-130 Hercules in the Air Force during the Vietnam Era. Since then I've written extensively on the C-130 and the troop carrier and tactical airlift missions. These are my airlift-related sites:
I've also written and published a novel based on my Vietnam experiences flying forward air controller/flareship missions over North Vietnam and Laos. This site describes the book and offers links to sites where you can order it online - The Cave.
At present I am working on a revision of my C-130 Tactical Airlift Book that was published in 1988. I also plan to have a history of the USAF combat airlift mission published soon as well.

I am a professional pilot with more than 15,000 hours flying time and 25 + years of civilian aviation experience. (That's as a pilot - I also have another 6,500 + flying hours as a military enlisted crewmember, giving me a total of almost 22,000 hours in the air.) Prior to taking early retirement in December 2000, I flew Hawker jets for Marathon Oil Company in Findlay, Ohio. Before transferring to Marathon in a corporate merger in 1998, I was with Ashland Oil in Ashland, KY and Houston, Texas flying Cessna Citations. Since my retirement I worked for Flight Safety, Texas as a Hawker simulator instructor I was laid off at the end of August 2002, due to the economic downturn. My son Chris passed away on May 7, 2003 after a short, but interesting life. Chris was born with Transposition of the Great Arteries, then developed a tumor in his brainstem as he became a young adult. This is the site I have created in his memory - Christopher Loyd McGowan
My father, Samuel Elbert McGowan, just passed away at the age of 90. He was an engineer/gunner on B-24 Liberators with the 93rd Bombardment Group in World War II. Here is the site I set up in memory of him and his brother, Delmar D. McGowan - B-24
