The Wizard of OZ was a novel written by L. Frank Baum in 1939, this wonderful novel became a beloved movie that generation after generation still loves to watch over and over time and time again. I am part of a new generation that fell for this timeless masterpiece. The year 1980 marked my very first showing of this movie. It enchanted me in every way possible. I was 3 years old at the time and it was the very first movie I ever sawwith my mother beside me and my godparents in tow. To this day The Wizard of Oz is my favorite movie. Since then, I have read the entire book series by L. Frank Baum from cover to cover many times. I also found myself involved with OZ and its magic and creativeness, the authors and their many works besides, and any other form of OZ I know of. Truly this masterpiece series is one of the best children's books of all time !
1999 marked the movie's official anniversary. 60th years in running and 2000 made another anniversary for OZ. THE STORY WAS 100 years old ! ( now 108 )  Next marks the 70th Anniversary of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz on the big screen.  May another 100 years hold a TREASURED classic forever.

Oz in American Culture

Jared Davis is part of what I would like to call the New Age of Wizard of Oz historians and fans of my generation.  He, along side Aaron Pacentine among others is what I prefer to call an Oz Extremist.  An Oz Extremist in my honest opinion celebrates the beauty in life and uses the creativity and imagination of a yesteryear moment to make the magic of life now to be better.  The Wizard of Oz is that moment for us, it's our passion. Our zest and happiness come from this tale is various forms.  Oz is everywhere in American culture.  The Wizard of Oz first came to be known as a series of 14 Oz books by Lyman Frank Baum in the early 1900's.  Later in the year of 1939 Oz was stapled into history forever.  The movie which starred Judy Garland as Dorothy, among others finally gave more magic to the story and it's evolved into a bigger production now than it ever has been.  When Oz appeared on television in 1956 this marked another milestone .  Now, 70 years since Oz has embedded its way to the top.  Countless movies and sequels have been made to attract an interesting audience time and time again.  The 60's brought an animated movie Return to Oz. The 70's brought The Wiz an all black casted Musical, the movie starred Diana Ross as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow. An animated story was in theatres and was called Journey Back to Oz with voice talents of Liza Minelli as Dorothy, Mickey Rooney as the Scarcrow and Ethel Merman as the voice of Mombi the Witch.  The 80's brought an anime Wizard of Oz to television starring Aileen Quinn as the voice of Dorothy.   Also,  Disney produced a sequel to the Wizard of Oz called Return to Oz.It was a live action feature film. The 90's places Oz in a precarious situation.  Saturday mornings had a Wizard of Oz animated half hour sequel from week to week to little acclaim.  But, what really happened to make the Witch of the West so evil?  Author Gregory Maguire's Oz was now called Wicked, and a PREQUEL to the Wizard of Oz itself.  Later in 2003 Wicked became known as a Musical, and a great one at that.  Fresh new talent and voices and acting made this story supreme and excellent of it's time. Idina Menzel makes her character of Elphaba Thropp, Witch of the West proud. As Kristin Chenoweth does to Glinda.  However, 2007 brought down the house with a new twist to the story of Oz that came into light.  In December 2007, Sci fi's mini series Tin Man became the most watched mini series ever. Oz is on the map once again. Where is Oz?  Oz is On Broadway, Oz is on tour, Oz is on youtube.com , Oz is in your home on video cassette and dvd.  Oz is in our hearts and it makes better people in this world inside all of us.  If we use its imagination and become creative Oz will live on forever.  I find that it's essential  to life.  Oz gave us beauty.  It gave us wonderful books to read,  and movies to enjoy and cherish. Oz is one in a million.  It holds the child in all of us and sets us free to escape to another world.  Of course there's no place like home.  But home is where it all began for most of us.  Home is where we probobly saw the 1939 movie for the first time.  Home is most likely where any of us first read the Baum book from 1900 of the Wizard of Oz.  Home is why we bought the DVD in the first place, so we could watch it at home.  So, you see Oz is everywhere. We carry it everyday inside of us alongside our loved ones. Where is your piece of Oz?
