May, Oregon Region SCCA event #2 race report.

Wet and wild, that's how you would describe the group C race. With only 14 cars
in the race group and me as the only EP car you would think that it would be quite
a boring race. Those of you that know the classes in group C know that the EP
cars are pretty much the slowest cars. When the rain comes out, things have a way
of changing. I qualified 13th in the group, nothing to brag about but then how many
GT cars should I be able to stay with? When the green flag dropped for the race I
realized very quickly that the rain was going to be a great equalizer. I jumped right
into 8th place at the start and remained there for the first couple laps when a
Porsche hit the wall in turn 8 and brought out a full course caution. We remained
under caution for about 10 minuets so they could get the car and all the debris
cleaned up. When we got the green flag for the restart I was in a tight group of
four cars, David Palmer GT-3, John Blizzard AS and ?? in a Porsche 914-6. The
four of us never took up more than about three car lengths worth of space for the
rest of the event. I managed to pass all of them by using the outside "wet" line and
moved up to 5th with one lap to go. David got wise to my lines and tucked in
behind me, staying right on my rear bumper. Trying to put a little distance between
David and myself I held 3rd gear just a little longer on the back straight. Those of
you that know PIR, the back straight is not really straight, and my little extra turned
into a bad decision. The car jumped sideways in the middle of the back straight and
I had to peddle the throttle to maintain control which let David get right up beside
me heading into turn 10. David and I went side by side through turns 10, 11 and 12
and he nosed me out at the finish line for 5th place. This was one of the best races
I have had in a long time, not because of the results but because of the competition
and the incredibly competent drivers I was racing with. All of this happened on a slippery, wet race track and we never touched each other. Luck or skill, call it
what you want, these guys were good!

FBR Motorsports Bio
FBR Motorsports has been operating in Oregon and Washington as a recreational outlet for Mark Hanken and his associates for the past 20 years. It began informally with a 16-year-old kid and a 125 Suzuki at the motocross track on the infield of PIR. Sense that time there have been many associates with the team, racing in all areas of motorcycling and with some very good results over the years. Three OMRA off road championships with rider Henry Pflegl, on Quads, multiple Woodland wintertrack high points winners Brian Timmons and Kyle English and even national TV coverage of Mark Hanken and Brian Timmons in the TNN broadcast of the Seattle “Quad Wars”.  While all this has been fun, brothers Mark and Scott have always wanted to go auto racing. Beginning in late 2000 the dream became reality. Mark purchased a race prepared 1972 Mazda RX2 from a local club racer and with a lot of work over the winter, had it ready for PIR on the first track day of 2001. In his first year as a driver Mark completed all his training requirements, received his senior competition license and through it all managed to finish ninth in points. So where did Scott fit into this? He spent the season as Crew chief and his reward at the end of the season, driver training in Marks RX2. Scott began his racing in 2002, completing his required training and finishing 7th in points at year end in a second, identically prepared, Mazda RX2. With the uniqueness of our choice of cars, (only four RX2’s racing on the west coast, two of which we will campaign) the unmistakable paint scheme and the professional presentation of our race team, FBR Motorsports will be one of the most recognizable entities in local Club racing. It is our goal to package our professional image with an equally professional corporation whose core business can benefit from our participation in local/regional auto racing events and expositions.
