"The Starr Boys"
  circa 1917
Above: As a teenager, Dorothy Shannon worked at the Starr Piano company which was located in the Whitewater Valley Gorge in Richmond, Indiana. This is a picture of her (second from left) and some of her employee friends. This was taken at the plant around 1917. Do you recognize anyone? I have several snapshots of young  people who worked there at that time. Please email me if you are interested in seeing them.
Right:This photograph was taken of Dorothy Shannon while she was at work at the Starr Piano Company about 1917 or 1918. Notice the apron.
Dorothy came from a long line of Quaker ancestors who had migrated here from North Carolina in the early 1800s. They had been some of the earliest settlers of Wayne County, Indiana. She was also a  descendent of the Drostes and Nieskes from Germany and the Shannons.
Her father, John Anderson Shannon, developed tuberculosis, and her family had a difficult time financially. Her mother, Hannah Alpharetta "Retta" Graham, had to take in laundry to survive. Dorothy and her brother both had to quit school early and go to work as teenagers.
The Rameys
Left:Elbert Homer Ramey (1897-1958) and Dorothy Shannon were married  in  Richmond, Indiana. E.H. Ramey was born in Washington, County Virginia. We are not sure of his parents' names or his family, but he said that his mother's name was Martha Carter and his father's name was Charles Ramey. We believe that he was raised by an uncle in Pike County, Kentucky. Although E.H. Ramey had to go to work at a young age and was not able to get much formal education, he was a prolific reader. According to his daughter Betty Martin, "he was always saying, "Listen, Dot, to this", and trying to read something like Plato aloud to her while she was busy cooking dinner for four children.
He was said to have been a quiet and polite person who was always trim, with excellent posture and very neat. He ironed his own clothes and
mended them. His eyes were very distinctive because they were a brilliant blue while his hair was nearly black and his complexion was tan.
Above:Elbert Homer Ramey and Dorothy Shannon Ramey had three daughters and one son, all born in the 1920s. This photograph is of their three daughters: left to right - Norma Jean b. 1926, Betty Jane b. 1923, and Janice Eileen b. 1921.
Above:This is Elbert Homers and Dorothy Ramey's son, William Richard (Bill) Ramey, born in 1929. With him in the photo is their beloved family dog, Jackie.
