Writing From The Trenches

Since the writing profession is such an isolated endeavor, here I thought I'd touch upon those aspects in my own writing process that I wish I could discuss more often with other writers. It is my hope in so doing, that maybe one or two of you won't feel like you're so alone:

One of the biggest battles I face daily as a writer is perfectionism. (Authorship and perfectionism should have NEVER been allowed to mix.) It wasn't until I started writing my fourth book, Beaches of Blind Belief, that perfectionism hit me the hardest. I'm glad it did, because I finally realized that I suffered from it and had to do something about it. I talked to family and friends, went to a counselor, and bought all the books about "getting past it."

What I found was I was working so hard at perfecting my perfectionism, that all the scenes in my head, still weren't coming out.

What I finally did, was I simply FOCUSED on my characters and asked them to take over. Not so simply, I suppose. To get to that focus takes tremendous discipline. But it works.
