A Little Girl with a Big Problem

Pictured above is five-year old Kerry who was diagnosed with type 1 juvenile diabetes before she reached her second birthday. After several unsuccessful attempts to regulate her insulin levels, she is now on an insulin pump. This decision was made after Kerry suffered a seizure and recurring bouts of ketoacidosis, a build-up of acids in the blood which can lead to coma or even death.

Kerry is just one of thousands of children living with type 1 diabetes. Each year the number of victims increases. These innocent children face a lifetime of injections and serious complications such as kidney damage, blindness, amputation and heart disease, to name just a few.

Hope for a Cure

There is no cure for type 1 diabetes, at least not yet. But there is hope, and it comes from a source which many people know little about—stem cell research. Most scientists believe that cell therapy will revolutionize medicine. We may soon have dramatic cures for diabetes, kidney disease, cancer, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, macular degeneration and a host of other diseases.

Kerry’s Sister

Kerry is only one of thousands of sick children who can benefit from stem cell research. In fact, she doesn’t have to look far to find another child who faces a similar plight.

Kerry’s sister, Julie, suffered the horrific effects of Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS)  a severe allergic reaction to a seizure medication. When Julie was only 10 months old, she had a reaction to a phenobarbital prescribed to treat pediatric epilepsy. Stevens Johnson Syndrome destroyed stem cells in her eyes. She has permanent blindness in her right eye and fluctuating vision in her left. Her only hope is to have a stem cell transplant which will then allow her to undergo a cornea transplant.

For more about Julie, go to the SJS Foundation website  and select “Julie’s Story”.

How You Can Help

I do not expect the stories of Kerry and Julie to touch your heart in quite the same way that they touch mine. After all, I am their mother.

Nevertheless, thousands of innocent children are suffering while our federal government stands idly by. As a concerned parent and President of the SJS Foundation, I’m trying my best to fight the good fight, but I can’t do it alone. That’s why I’m asking for your help in contributing to this lifesaving research.

Roses for Research

As a token of appreciation for helping to create a brighter future for children everywhere, we will send you a beautiful paper rose for your donation of $10.00 or more. Your kindness and generosity will be rewarded in ways you cannot possibly imagine.
