Bird watcher in Alaska - I have flown birds for over 10 years, but have finally decided to retire mine. Fair condition, all the mods, with instruments, Ivo prop, BRS chute and full enclosure (not installed).  It does need to be recovered. Engine runs perfect with about 100 hours on it (503 Rotax), and has Mike Jacober's adjustable dual carbs. I also have about two-thirds of another B1-RD airframe for parts or project, plus miscellaneous parts.  I would like $2500.
My buddy also has a B1-RD, comes with less stuff but is flyable now, engine in good shape and has most of the mods also, included 8 gallon tank, nice instrument pod and skis.

I am the owner of two B1RDs. One is equipped with the Cuyuna 430, wood 72" original prop, asi, altimeter, tach, egt, cht, original drop ailerons and 20" main gear tires. This aircraft has had the lower fuselage tube beefed up at the lower keel connection point where it was found to have broken during handling while without cable bracing in place. At this time it has its wings removed to faciltate winter storage in garage. The second aircraft is essentially identical, but it is equipped with the Cuyuna 430-UL2-02 and it has its wings removed pending replacement of its left wing leading and trailing edge spars and king post tube.  These are both waiting for spare time and  warm hanger space. Both of which are in short supply in the NYC metro area.

When I was six years old my dad took me to see the movie "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines". That was 1966, and I was, even then, smitten with the Santos -Dumont replica.  Three years ago I started my own design, and that's when I discovered the B1RD. I ceased my design efforts and am now looking for a low cost project or whatever. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I just the ripped the landing gear off my poor bird. So I pull up the B1RD page, go to parts etc. and find the guys in Reno.702-733-6795. I get some guy waiting for a call on a pay phone....He sound like he was waiting for his next instructions from a kidnapping drop. So with a bit of sleuth work I came up with a New phone # for The Flying Machine Co.  It is

Our B1-RD finally returned to the air on August 9,1998 after an extended repair job.  The repair was required after one of the partners failed to tie down the bird after his flight.  The repairs included 2 new ailerons, 2 trailing edges, one leading edge and new sails. All parts needed were fabricated from raw tube stock.  After talking with a local B1-RD owner, I decided to take the opportunity to change the battens from the top with bungees to the bottom with Quicksilver type lexan saddles.  I was told that normally this required changing the battens to 1/2" tubing since the lexan saddles were made to fit inside the 1/2" tubing.  Rather than go through the time and expense of bending all new 1/2" battens, I came up with an alternate method that seems to work great.  I found that 1/2" tubing fit nice and snug over the original battens so I cut off the rear flat portion of each batten and slid a 3" long piece of 1/2" tubing over it.  The batten was cut to fit snug against the lexan saddle.  The 1/2" tubing was then slid down over the lexan saddle to batten joint.  At this point I could "tension" the batten toward the front of the wing and used a self metal screw to attach the 1/2" tubing to the original batten.
This set up is supposed to hold the airfoil shape better and you do not have to worry about the bungee cord breaking or coming loose.  Yesterday's flight was fairly short due to 12 to 15 mph winds so I have not had much of a chance to evaluate any changes to the flight conditions yet.  All I know for sure is that it was good to get up in the air again and return to a good landing in spite of the wind.

I am half owner of a B1RD and know of 2 more in this area. I have floats but no hardware and would like to purchase drawings or hardware. Plane has 430rd Cuyuna.  Have not flown for two years but hope to again this year.
----------------------------------------------------------------From: David Bacchi dbacchi@hotmail.com 8/1/98  I love your site! A friend just bought a B1RD. He said it is very easy to fly. My question is: How hard is it to learn to fly one of these planes? He said he could teach me. Is it really that easy? What should I do?
Response:  Get instruction in a two place ultralight first!  The B1RD is more forgiving and more fun than most aircraft, but it is not worth risking your one and only neck by failing learn the safest way.

I would be very interested to know if there is either a manual or  a set of instructions on THE correct way of accurately rigging the B1RD. The flying wires which run up to the leading edge have no turnbarrels. This seems logical to me, because the length of these sets the dihedral angle. The wires leading to the trailing edge are obviously adjustable by turnbarrels in order to set the wing angle of incidence. This is essentially what I would like to know. How can they be set accurately and  should they be set so that the wing has a certain degree of washout? Would be very grateful if you could connect me to somebody who might be able to help.
