I am Scott Thomas, currently from Tampa, FL. I hold a Private Pilot License (non current) and I am a member of EAA Chapter 175, Vandenberg Airport, Tampa, FL.
Years ago my father, my brothers and I built a B1RD (serial #117 I think). We had many, many hours of fun with it in North West Ohio, and later in Kentucky and Indiana after my folks relocated just South of Cincinnati.
About seven years ago, the B1RD got bent following an engine failure after departing from a small field. No injuries. Treated with respect, a B1RD will never hurt you. It will however teach you some valuable lessons. In a dead stick situation with a B1RD, never make major turns at low altitude. It wastes your air speed and altitude and you will probably stall on a wing tip. We learned this lesson twice I am embarrassed to say, and though no one ever got more than a bruised pride, we spent plenty more on repairs than we needed to.
After seven years without, I am finally putting the venerable old B1RD back into action, and I can't wait. Looking forward to communicating with all of you.
Special thanks go to my wife and kids who have been very patient with my recent obsession, putting this page together. Even greater thanks to my wife for not objecting (in any major way) to my putting the old B1-RD back together. I sincerely hope all who visit here enjoy the fruit of my efforts. Fly safely and have loads of fun.
Scott Thomas...
