ITALY PILGRIMAGE: Assisi
ASSISI
This ancient picturesque, charming, and (architecturally) predominantly medieval city is best known for the two 13th century Catholic saints who called Assisi "home," St. Francis and St. Clare --both of whom are interred in their respective Basilicas within the walls of this city.

(For more one these two saints, click HERE)
A plaque at Chiesa Nuova marks the site of St. Francis' birthplace and family home.
The Streets of Assisi are very hilly and steep, with equally hilly and steep stairways practically everywhere connecting the streets (like the one depicted in the photo above). And for a good reason: Safety and security. From ancient pre-Christian times through the early Renaissance period, bands --and even whole armies-- of rebels, robbers, political rivals, and foreign invaders made life dangerous for most people. Hence almost all towns and cities in Italy were fortified, and built at the highest elevations possible.
Basilica di San Francesco
The "Basilica of Saint Francis" (also seen in the first photo above) dominates the Assisi skyline.  The upper church (seen here) includes some frescoes by renown Renaissance artists such as
Giotto and Cimabue.
Piazza Inferiore di San Francesco
Viewed from the edge of the Piazza Superiore di San Francesco in front of the upper church of the Basilica (seen in the photo above), this plaza brings visitors and pilgrims to the lower church, where St. Francis is interred, as well as into the west end of the city itself.
