About Michael's Journals Foundation
On May 2, 2002, we lost our dear friend Michael Petriano.  Only one day after his passing, knowing that his memory must live on, his family and friends came together and formed Michael’s Journals Foundation.  Michael touched everyone who knew him and it is our vision that Michael’s Journals Foundation will continue to do just that.  One of Michael’s last wishes was to help others who are suffering and it is the mission of the Foundation to see it to fruition.

Michael suffered from manic depression, also know as bipolar disorder.  We who witnessed Michael’s beautiful, inspirational life and his triumph in the face of adversity have dedicated ourselves to helping others suffering from mental illness.  It is the mission of Michael’s Journals Foundation to establish and sustain a fund that will be used to enhance the lives of persons suffering from mental illness.  We are dedicated to supporting mental illness programs and services and improving awareness and understanding so that individuals suffering from mental illness can live and function like Michael, with dignity and pride.

About Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder affects over two million Americans and is one of the most treatable forms of mental illness.  It is a condition that causes an individual to experience severe “lows” (depression) alternating with inappropriate, extreme “highs” (mania).  Each cycle can last from several days to several months, often with normal periods in between.  Symptoms typically begin in late adolescence to early adulthood and continue throughout the life of the individual.  Men and women are affected equally regardless of race, education, occupation or income.  The incidence of Bipolar Disorder is higher in relatives of people with Bipolar Disorder or Depression.  Without effective treatment, Bipolar Disorder can have devastating effects from substance abuse to suicide.
