2007 update: Lately I have been using my MySpace page (www.myspace.com/billackerbauer) much more than this one, so be sure to check that out for the most up-to-date information about gigs and other goings on.

I am a journalist, writer, teacher, husband and parent as well as a musician. I live in Johnstown, N.Y., a city of about 9,000 sturdy souls not far from Albany and Saratoga Springs.
I'm mildy obsessive about real folk music: Hard-core country blues like that of Blind Blake, Pink Anderson, Rev. Gary Davis, Robert Johnson and Son House, old-timey mountain and gospel music (Doc Watson, Dock Boggs, the Carter Family), classic country (Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson), lowdown murder ballads, Irish drinking songs, political-topical folksongs and other styles of acoustic music that are rooted in tradtion. As opposed to most of the music you hear on the radio today, which is rooted in corporate greed and feebleminded pop culture ... but don't get me started. I am particularly nuts about the life and music of Woody Guthrie and the guitar playing of Mississippi John Hurt. See my HEROES page for more on my influences.
I do a little songwriting and recording, but I don't have a studio-recorded CD yet. Maybe next year... In the meantime, I have several homemade, lo-fi .mp3 recordings on my MUSIC page for your listening pleasure.
If your event or organization needs some simple, somewhat wholesome, old-fashioned entertainment, drop me a line at smokinbill@aol.com.
Enjoy the Web site and stay in touch.
With my son Liam, age 2, on "vocals" and random percussion.
