Results for Sonoma from the Oakland Invitational Relays April 5, 2008:

We traveled to Laney Community College in Oakland for the Oakland Invitational Relays. We took eleven boys and eleven girls. The idea for this meet is to enter individuals and relay teams that will be competitive, have some fun and possibly bring home some medals. We succeeded on all counts. We entered 21 individuals events and 10 relays and brought home medals in 19 of the entered events. Medals were given out to the top three finishers in the relay races and to the top five in the individual events (all field events were individual events). The girls finished 3rd out of 18 schools that scored points and the boys finished 5th out of 20 schools that scored points.

The day started out great for Sonoma athletes. Christina Dwyer placed 2nd in the long jump, she broke her own school record on her third long jump on the day, 17' 8" NWI, that places Christina 11th on the Redwood Empire Prep best list. At the same time teammate Anna Dwyer jumped 16' 2" a PR for her, placing her tied for seventh on the Sonoma's All Time Top Ten. Meanwhile Patrick Sammons took first place in the discus, defending last year's championship with a throw of 139' 02". The excitement didn't stop there. Anna Dwyer placed 3rd in the triple jump with an impressive leap of 35' 3" beating her previous best by over one foot, moving her to the number two spot on Sonoma's All Time Top Ten and 20th on the Redwood Empire Prep best. On the track the boys 4 x 800 team beat their time from the Eagle Classic by 7 seconds running an 8:44.66 and captured 1st place just ahead of Piedmont. The kids are having fun, but they are working hard too, and it's showing up on the track. We next go against league rival Casa Grande and we are hoping that the excitement the team generated today will carryover onto Wednesday's meet.
