I am a Los Angeles artist whose paintings in watercolor, oil and acrylic reflect a B.A. in Art at UCLA, four years of study with Dr. Alex Vilumsons at Everywoman's Village, and combined study and teaching with Artist Co-op 7 since 1994.
During the last four years, I have studied with Dean Ruth Weisberg's group in Italy at Santa Reparata International Art School in Florence, Italy, and twice in Giogalto, Tuscany learning monotype with a press. We have exhibited together at USC Hillel Art Gallery twice, and will exhibit again February 2008.
My paintings explore the surface of a two-dimensional graphic world and break away from full subject identity and realism. Surfaces are textured with experimental treatments employing the effects of wax resist, collage, and multiple layers of paint. With a prepared watercolor palette, lots of water and a rather big brush, I drop in large dabs of color. I pick up the paper, turn, add more color, and let the drips show me the direction the painting will go. Sometimes a grid is formed, and I can lay in color, keeping vaules and contrasts in mind. Subject sources range from landscape and built environments to the figure, animals and still life.

MY FAMILY
Jaime Gesundheit my husband, an architect and developer. He is my best patron! He has my paintings hanging in his office buildings in Houston, Texas and Ventura, California. I am grateful for his interest in my art, and for arranging our many trips around the world, giving color to my palette! Daniela Gesundheit, our daughter, a talented singer, guitarist, actress, Wesleyan U graduate. Performs at my receptions, and has my best paintings hanging in her room in San Francisco. She has a cat, Bird, and performs in New York City and Montreal. Our love, however, lives on. We have established the AVI GESUNDHEIT TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP for architecture students at USC, and the AVI EFRAIM GESUNDHEIT MUSIC FUND at Milken High School. He lives on in our hearts forever. Bernie and Renny Shapiro, my parents, have my artwork on their walls in Malibu, and have always been a great encouragment and inspiration for what's really important in life. Bea Goldstein, my grandmother, was an excellent artist and student of mine in a watercolor class at the UJ.
Philip Guston, my mother's uncle, and an artist I never met, but admire his work greatly! See his works at McKee Gallery.
Abe and Fannie Gesundheit, Jaime's parents, in sweet memory, were proud of all their children and grandchildren's accomplishments.
