MARTIN LENZI
Martin Lenzi was a Swiss convert to the Mormon Church. He arrived in the Salt Lake Valley with the J. Hoffines Company in September 1857 from Philadelphia where he had been living. Lenzi was a tobacconist by trade and was probably not a prolific painter. He was unassuming but was well known in pioneer art circles for his still-life paintings. He won prizes in the Territorial Fair and was even the janitor for the short lived Deseret Academy of Fine Art in 1863. Lenzi's work seems to have reflected the 19th century interest in trompe-l'oeil or "fool the eye" illusionism. His painting of a pine board, grapes and leaves with such precision indicates that he was an artist of some training and talent. He might have been influenced by the work of Edwin Deakin, a California artist who came to Utah in 1883.

In the name of God, Amen.  I, Thomas Simpson of Armstrong Township,
Westmoreland County and State of Pennsylvania, Farmer, being weak in Body but
of sound and disposing mind and memory and duly considering the Uncertainty of
human life, Do make this my last will and testament.  In manner and form
following, Viz. Impremis: I will and direct that all of my just debts and
funeral Expenses be paid with all convenient Speed by my Executors or those
that will take upon them the probate of my Will - Item. I Give and bequeath
to my Brother James Simpson that Tract of Land I formerly Improved on with
all my moveable property to pay him for his trouble until my Nephew Thomas
Simpson comes of age, then he is to enjoy the foresaid tract of Land.  I
Bequeath unto Samuel Hall that part of Land formerly claimed by my Brother
Andrew Simpson or pay for it to be at the discretion of my said Brother James
Simpson. Item: I Do constitute and appoint my Brother James Simpson as my Sole

James Simpson to Andrew Simpson. To all Persons to Whom these Presents shall
come I, James Simpson, send greetings. Know ye that I the said James Simpson
of Indiana County and Township of Centre for the sum of Thirty Dollars to me
in hand paid by Andrew Simpson of the same place at and before the ensealing
and delivery hereof Have Granted devised released and Confirmed and by these
presents do grant demise release and confirm unto the said Andrew Simpson His
Heirs and Assigns all my Rights title Interest and claim whatsoever of in and
to a certain Tract of land lying and being in Armstrong County Allegheny
Township granted by Warrant to Agness Simpson for two hundred and fifty acres
bearing date the 22nd November 1785 Joining land of whereon now James Guthery
and John Johnston now lives as by the draft from the Land Office will now
plainly appear and conveyed from Charles Gibson and Agness his wife to me
bearing date the sixteenth day of May 1800 Together with all and singular the
Rights liberties Priviledges and Appurtenances thereunto or anywise
appertaining to Have and to Hold the said Tract or parcel of land unto the
said Andrew Simpson his Heirs and Assigns to the only proper use and behoof
of the said Andrew Simpson his Heirs and Assigns forever subject to the
arearages of purchase Money and Interest later to become due to the State of
