San Jose Speedway, 1977, Dennis Mattish Photos
These are some of the cars that competed in the State of
California NASCAR Permatex Super Modified Division between 1975
and 1977 (although at this point the photos on this site go all the way back to
the beginning! The series ran at Madera Speedway, San Jose Speedway, Clovis
Speedway and Altamont Speedway. San Jose Speedway, next to Reid-Hillview
Airport, was sold to developers and turned into a trailer
park\storage unit deal in 1978. I started going to the Supers in 1972. There are many great memories of those cars and this page
is dedicated to preserving them. If you have pictures from this
era, send me a file of it (or mail the picture and I'll return it
after I scan it in) so we can all enjoy them.
"Quick Nick" Rescino - This
picture is from late in the 1975 season, it is the car that set
the all-time track record for the 1/3 mile San Jose Speedway at
13.333 seconds. He's my personal fav! No one has won the Johnny
Key Memorial Race more times than he has. AND he's the only guy
to ever win a World Of Outlaws race in a Super Modified! He's a
legend for sure. Click HERE to see
the early 1975 version of this car. To see the 1976 eddition

If anyone has the other cars he ran, e-mail me.
Danny O'Neil - 1977 - He ran BCRA
Midgets as well. This car was previously black and run by Rod
Furtado. It was incredibly fast and won it's share of the Coors
100's. Here
is another pic of the car in the pits at Madera
Johnny Brazil - 1977 - Another hard
charger who did well in the Coors 100's and a regular top 5
finisher.
Chuck Christian - 1976 - State Champ and
a really neat car. Click HERE to
see a better picture.
Mike Sargent - 1977 - Track Champ\State
Champ, the Willard Radiator Special. What a team! Those guys
really had it together in '77! A metallic purple car! When they
clinched the championship, corks flew from the pits to the
infield! The son of legend Marshall Sargent finally made it big.
Mark Sargent - 1978 - Mikes brother. A
hard charger. Never had the top equipment but could drive the
wheels off of whatever he got into. He was one of the bad boys
along with Nick Ringo (who flew the skull & crossbones on his
wing). Between the two of them, Paul Bender (the chief starter)
never had a dull Saturday!
Howard Kaeding's car in 1977 in the pits at Madera.
This car was really fast! He gave Mike Sargent a run for
his money...Here's one of the
"Cambell Comet" in the 1x car at speed in San Jose.
Everett Edlunds 1977 ride. Another
consistant finisher, espcially in the Key races. This car showed
up for display at Altamont a few years back during the Superbowl
of Open Wheel Racing...
Dick Whalen -1977 - The only dual
element winged Super in the series. I don't think he ever won a
main, but it was sure a cool car. One night Ken Bowman climbed
his right rear and launched into one of the biggest wrecks I ever saw at the speedway.
Pat Rose lifts a wheel coming off of
turn two back in 1977. This was another of my favs. Pat told me
of all the racing he's done (including the sprints!) this was his
personal favorite time of his carreer. Hard to argue with the
speed and confines of the old track. Here's Pat
getting ready to race (Jerry Freitas' car is in the background).
And here is the team photo.
Notice the Whites! Here is a photo of
Pat in 1993 at the Fairgrounds.
