This is Me
The Heart that Beats in the Shark of Steel
In all of it's power and glory - tactical weapons and weapons of mass destruction, precise navigation and sophisticated communications, absolute stealth and long range sonar, nuclear propulsion to steam submerged many times around the world; ability to deter an enemy, defend a people or destroy a nation; respected by all, feared by most, and loved only by the men called submariners - the submarine is but a mass of steel, electronics and weaponry.

It's the sweat of the men in her that's the lifeblood flowing through the veins of the beast. It's their courage that matches the violence of the seas. It's their dedication and ingenuity that provide the margin of victory over the enemy. It's their service that assures the peace for a free nation. And it's their personal sacrifice that is shared only by their families. These are the men who live in the belly of the beast. They are the crew. They are the heart that beats in the shark of steel.

SUBMARINER
I am submariner. The proud and few, the mighty breed of fighting men.
Like those before me, I have earned my shipmate’s trust in all I do for I am submariner.
I wear on my chest with pride the symbol of our breed, the coveted dolphins.
Whether silver or gold I wear them with pride just the same for I am submariner. Before the iron giants flew in the sky, the steel boats moved across the ocean’s depths, and I was the cause. I am submariner.
When the Rising sun came upon eagle’s island nest in the morning hours I was there for I am submariner.
When nation young men were, sent into the jungles to combat tyranny, I was there for I am submariner.
When Red Bear’s wall fell and two nations were united again as one I was there for I am submariner.
When Jealous Man’s regime brought tyranny on the twin giants and the House of Five Side’s I was there because I am submariner.
Even now as swift justice is dealt to those who did hurt the eagle’s innocents, I am here for I am submariner.
My deeds often go unnoticed and my job is often overlooked but I am here just the same for I am submariner.
I, like those before me, am a Warrior and a barbarian; I am a sailor and a fighter. I am submariner.
I am a hunter, a killer, a messenger, a protector for I am submariner. The citizen’s of this nation of freedom, bravery and democracy may rest easy for I am here and I am a submariner.
I am a savage beats whose realm knows no bounds for in the murky depths of this planets greats sea I reign supreme for, I am submariner.
I am ever changing with the times and ever evolving to something new but I am living memoir to those who died before me to defend freedom and justice, for I am submariner. Whether my career end here or lives on in the years to come I may rest easy for I am submariner and I am not alone.

The Submariner
Only a submariner realizes to what great extent an entire ship depends on him as an individual. To a landman this is not understandable, and sometimes it is even difficult for us to comprehend, but it is so!

A submarine at sea is a different world in herself, and in consideration of the protracted and distant operations of submarines, the Navy must place responsibility and trust in the hands of those who take such trips to sea.

In each submarine there are men who, in the hour of emergency or peril at sea, can turn to each other. The men are ultimately responsible to themselves and each other for all aspects of operation of their submarine. They are the crew. They are the ship.

This is perhaps the most difficult and demanding assignment in the Navy. There is not an instant during his tour as a submariner that he can escape the grasp of responsibility. His privileges in view of his obligations are almost ludicrously small, nevertheless, it is the spur which has given the Navy its greatest mariners - the men of the Submarine Service.

It is a duty which most richly deserves the proud and time-honored title of.... Submariner.
